About this listen

Mysterious, magical, and a little bit deadly. Welcome to Unholy Island.

Esme Gray runs the guest house and tends to the ethereal wards that protect the island. She’s sheltering from a terrible past and will do anything to stay safely hidden.

Luke Taylor has been searching for his missing twin for months, but has begun to believe that his brother might be dead. With his hope in tatters, a tip off leads him to a remote tidal island in the North Sea. It’s further out than the famous Holy Island, and far stranger.

Visitors shouldn’t be able to stay for more than two nights, so when Luke breaks this rule, the close-knit community is sent into turmoil. The residents of Unholy Island have secrets and they intend to keep them.

When Luke stumbles across one of the islanders dead on the shore, he finds himself under suspicion, made worse by his own troubles washing up on the tide.

Esme is drawn to Luke, but she doesn’t trust her own instincts. That’s not ideal for a witch—especially when there is a killer on the loose and a storm is rolling in....

The Ward Witch is the first book in a brand new contemporary fantasy series from the best-selling author of magical fiction, Sarah Painter.

Love this new pocket world of magic and mystery. I read Night Raven series and loved it and was so glad the new series is also full of creativity and weirdness and interesting characters that are easy to invest in and love.

Unholy Island is an oasis

This was a very interesting read!! The cover and title caught my eye especially for October!! I loved the mystery, witchy, spooky, magical and love story vibes ! Great ending even though I saw it coming. Can’t wait for the next book!!

After reading the Crow series I was excited for something new from Sarah, and I like that there was some mentions of characters we heard about in the Crow series. I definitely like the mystery of the island, Esme and Luke however, this book is not as engaging as a previous series. I am hoping for the next books will be more engaging.

Another cool magical world from Sarah Painter

Nothing

It’s a good story, but is sooo slow! And often boring. The mystery is good, but exciting moments are rare. The character build is fine, but too much of the book is character ‘musings’ in my opinion.

Story is slow

It’s worth the credit. I’d like to see what happens next on the island. I’m especially eager to hear Fiona’s story

A very cute read
