Elegant prose and fine reader

I had never read Trollope before and was delighted with his wonderful prose, a pinnacle of a great century of stylized English. Hawthorne is also an animated and wonderful performer. I strongly recommend this volume to readers who love high style.

a delight

A charming story--witty and insightful. Beautifully read as well. This novel is a perfect introduction to Trollop's works and to the world of Barchester.

Great Discovery (for me)!

Being an avid reader, and having read a LOT of Victorian fiction (Dickens, Austen, the Brontes, etc.) I'm almost ashamed to say I'd never heard of Anthony Trollope. I'm glad I discovered him!

This was thoroughly enjoyable "read" with a thoroughly enjoyable narrator in Mr. Hawthorne.

I heartily recommend anything Mr. Trollope has written and anything Mr. Hawthorne has narrated!

Not the best of the Barchester series.

What did you like best about The Warden? What did you like least?

Trollope is wonderful. The characters at the center of this story aren't particularly interesting, however.

Would you recommend The Warden to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend The Warden to anyone who likes Trollope. Despite certain weaknesses, as the first book in the Barchester chronicles, it is worth reading. The later books in this series are more interesting. Don't give up on the series as a whole, if you don't find The Warden to be particularly compelling.

The Best

Without doubt, an outstanding narration of an outstanding book! It could hardly be any better! Mr. Hawthorne's narration is perfect for the book's story and style. I didn't want it to end! Highly recommended!

Hate it!

I tried. I truly tried. But, no matter how hard I attempted this book simply bored me to tears. It just went on and on. There was no action. No detail. How it can be described as a wonderful work of historical fiction is beyond me. Maybe someone else will write a review and enlighten me..
