Publisher's summary

Have you ever wondered how a man like Adolf Hitler could have come into power? How he legally became a dictator by using a democratic process? Or what events led up to his reign of terror?

The answers lie in the Weimar Republic. Amid the devastation of World War I, Germany’s monarchy provided no answers. A democratic government seemed the only way to appease Allied nations and solve the many disasters that were already at the country’s doorstep.

Here, you will learn how:

  • The Weimar Republic gave birth to democracy in Germany
  • Whether the republic was effective in solving the grave issues facing the nation
  • What despised political treaty the country had to sign and why it was so hated
  • What led to the republic’s epic collapse
  • And how a democracy was able to give rise to one of the most brutal dictatorships in modern history

Interesting

I was having a hard time finding a book that covered Germany in the interwar period. I enjoyed this quite a bit

Excellent, maybe not worth the credit though

Loved it. Such a concise summary of the interwar period before the Nazis took control and Hitler became essentially a dictator. Filled in a lot of gaps for me.

But it’s only four hours long so I’m not sure it’s worth a credit. I just paid the $10 or whatever for the audio book and saved the credit for something more substantial.

A very complete narrative of the Weimar Republic.

This has been one of my favorite Captivating History Audiobooks. It starts at the very end of WWI with the mutiny of the German Navy and ends with Hitler achieving autocratic control of the German nation. The audiobook details the rise of various factions grasping for power after Germanys surrender in WWI. A very fragile proto democracy finally begins in Germany based in the city of Weimar thus the name. Jason Zenbia continues to provide his excellent narration to the audiobooks. Thoroughly interesting throughout!

Great lesson on rise of fascism

This work delves into the details of the Weimar Republic and how weaknesses or misplaced trust in governmental structures to safeguard democracy can be exploited and allow authoritarian movements like fascism to take over. It also goes into the bad economic decisions taken that exacerbated pain of post-WWI situation. I really enjoyed how the story links together the origins of the republic and forces acting on it that eventually caused its usurpation by the Nazis.

The narration is well done and engaging.
