About this listen

Passion, infidelity, social climbing, and one very special white rose weave a seductive narrative in this intelligent and tender novel.

At 48, Marian Kahn, a professor of history at Columbia, has reached a comfortable perch. Married, wealthy, and the famed discoverer of the 18th-century adventuress, Lady Charlotte Wilcox, she ought to be content. Instead, she is horrified to find herself profoundly in love with 26-year-old Oliver, the son of her eldest friend.

When Marian's cousin, the snobbish Barton, announces his engagement to Sophie, a graduate student in Marian's department, Marian, Oliver, and Sophie find their lives woefully entangled, and their hearts turned in unfamiliar directions. All three of them will learn that love may seldom be straightforward, but it's always a gift.

From the West Village to the Upper East Side, from the Hamptons to Millbrook, The White Rose is at once a nuanced and affectionate reimagining of Strauss's beloved opera, Der Rosenkavalier, and a mesmerizing novel of our own time and place.

Ambivalent from start to finish

Although I have thoroughly enjoyed the first three books I read of Jean Hanff Korelitz, I had trouble immersing myself in both the plot and the characters. I never felt I really knew them.

Fascinating Character Study

For me, what made this novel so compelling was the author’s character development. Each person in this story was a fascinating creation that seemed so three dimensional. I also appreciated the originality of this novel. How many stories today have an older woman in a relationship with a younger man and not present the woman as some sort of freak. This novel is also an interesting study of life in New York today. If Edith Wharton was writing today this would be the kind of novel she would write.

Well written, but not story fell flat

I love this author, so I ignored the reviews about this title.
While the book is well-written (which is why I hung in there and finished), it is definately not up to her standards.

This book is as slow as christmas!

What disappointed you about The White Rose?

I work and listen to Books (instead of music) for 12+ hours a day. With this book I found myself having to turn it off just to finish work because it was putting me to sleep. *yawn*

What was most disappointing about Jean Hanff Korelitz’s story?

SOOO S-L--O-O-O-O-O-W. It just kept dragging on and on.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I do not think the narrator did a bad job. I just think it was a bad story.

Giving this book more than 1 star is generous

Lots of fluff, struggled to stay awake while trying to finish it. Very boring, and the ending seemed too tamed.
