Christina MacKinnon is secretly relieved to be a widow. She is equally desperate to distance herself from the clan of her dead husband, but as the heir to his estate—one she needs in order to support her siblings—she must first stave off both the advances and threats of the man next in line to inherit. It seems the only person she can turn to is a nearby stranger who seems inclined to help her. But he has a request….
Freshly returned from the war, Lachlan Kincaid has one aim: to see justice served to the MacKinnons for betraying his family years ago and depriving him of his inheritance. While biding his time at a nearby inn, he discovers the death of the MacKinnon laird—whose widow has inherited everything. The way to accomplish his goal is becoming more evident, but the path is murkier than he could have foreseen.
As their lives intersect, it becomes clear Lachlan and Christina have to join forces. But to do so courts more danger, and it requires a sacrifice from Christina.

the story is also deserving of 5 stars. I could tell the author was well versed in the history of the time and place and I truly appreciate that. it transported right into the story. I think the characters were well written too, and the author resisted the temptation to have them act one way and then another to fit the story better, rather having them stick to what would make sense for them. I much prefer that 10/10 times. I thought their backgrounds were interesting and made for characters that felt different from the usual but still relatable and people I could root for. I'm really glad I gave this book a chance and I can't wait to get to the rest of the series.
