About this listen

A false engagement. A mysterious coast. Two reluctant hearts.

Much to her father's dismay, Miss Amelia Buxton aspires to become a spinster, just like her eccentric aunt. Growing up with parents who married for every reason but love, she has never seen a joyful marriage. When Amelia requests a summer trip to the legendary waters of Brighton, her father allows her the excursion, but with one requirement: She must return engaged, or agree to the proposal of the man of his choosing.

Crawling with tourists, Brighton is not the town Adam Claridge once loved. When his sister Eleanor disappears without warning, Adam is desperate to bring her home. In his search, he happens upon Miss Amelia Buxton, a young tourist that proves vital in his search for Eleanor. But Amelia is conducting a search of her own-a search for a husband-and Adam has little choice but to offer a fair trade: He will play the role of Amelia's betrothed in exchange for her assistance in finding Eleanor.

Convenient at first, Amelia and Adam's arrangement quickly plummets into disarray. Falling in love had not been part of their bargain.

A relaxing predictable story

A relaxing predictable story somewhat coloured by the silly narrator who overshadowed the plot with unnecessary emphasis and faciteousness. Her calls of each chapter oozed contempt. Annoying. narrators job is to add to the plot and blend into the situation unobtrusively. This narrator did not allow us to settle into the developing story, rather she dominated and placed her reading as more important. However I did finish it, I think. fell asleep.

SWEET LOVE STORY

The story gets a 5-star rating from me , the narrator gets a 2-star. The narrator has a nice voice but reads in a sing-song voice & her male voice is a whisper & too feminine sounding to be male, very distracting. Listened to this narrator in other books & had that same reaction plus I need to increase the narrator’s speed, she reads much too slow for me. Sorry for this negative reaction to this book but felt I must be honest regardless the STORY IS DARLING!

Simple, sweet story, but the narrator is far out of her depth with British accents.

Can't actually review the story

I couldn't get past the second chapter. The narrator's voice was so distracting and annoying I could not listen to the book. I deleted any other titles with the same narrator. She would be great for reading lyrical poetry, but that style doesn't work for a novel.

Built on white lies and weak, predictable story line

I didn’t appreciate all the lies and lack of propriety exhibited by the characters. Everyone had their own best interests in mind and didn’t mind saying “white lies” to keep things going in their favor. Weak characters and strained, rather odd story line. After listening to many books in this genre, where high morals and respectful character were prized and worked for, this book left a bad taste in my mouth. Didn’t seem founded on the true characteristics of the upper class 1800’s England society.

Great Story!

I loved this story, and the characters were very likable. I thought the narrator was going to be annoying in the way she annunciates her t's, but she quickly eased into a natural and soothing voice and now is probably one of my favorite narrators. Very good and sweet story!

Couldn't finish.

Couldn't make myself finish because of the narration and story. Story seemed so predictable and the narration was tiresome.
