About this listen
Enjoy a classic horror story that begins with a hair-raising "Canadian canoe" trip down the flooded Danube. The float trip lands two adventurers on a willow-covered island in the stream, amid sharp shale, rapids, rain, and howling winds. Disastrous erosion and danger soon engulfs the two men. But the campers survive a murderous attempt to secretly scuttle their canoe and steal their food supplies.
When they hide from the perpetrators amid the heavy storm on their small, fast-disintegrating island, the campers also hear voices and gong-like dronings over the willows. Then they try to dodge detection from the aliens seeking to obliterate them, but it soon becomes apparent the outsiders are searching to make a human sacrifice.
It goes from bad to worse, though, as the willows themselves seem to draw ever closer after dark, until one of the Ancient Ones actually locates these terrified, menaced campers and rushes forward to seize and destroy them. But how can they escape without a paddle for their canoe, or food, or fuel, and with nothing ahead for the next 50 miles but willow and rapids?

C. S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about Heaven and Hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, where we discover that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven?

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Written initially in French, later translated by the author into English, Molloy is the first book in Dublin-born Samuel Beckett's trilogy. It was published shortly after WWII and marked a new, mature writing style, which was to dominate the remainder of his working life. Molloy is less a novel than a set of two monologues narrated by Molloy and his pursuer, Moran.

Story
Plucked from time, Sir Thomas More arrives on the human colony of Astrobe in the year AD 2535, where there is trouble in utopia: Can he and his motley followers save this golden world from the Programmed Persons, and the soulless perfection they have engineered? The survival of faith itself is at stake in this thrilling, uncategorizable, wildly inventive first novel - but the adventure is more than one of ideas. As astonishingly as Philip K. Dick and other visionaries of the 1960s new wave, Lafferty turns the conventions of space-opera science fiction upside down and inside out.

In what many refer to as one of the first and greatest science fiction thrillers, a mysterious stranger wanders into an inn, wrapped head-to-toe in bandages. What lies beneath the bandages is something even more mysterious. As Wells tackles issues of identity, deception, and the deterioration of the human mind, listeners will be drawn into the story of the mysterious man, whose own mistakes end up whisking him into a whirlwind of deceit, terror, and even murder. In the end, the question will be asked: when your sense of self and identity vanish, who will you become?

The plot revolved around a two man canoe trip. One man was the suspicious one, warning his companion about the dangers of the supernatural, while the other was comparatively the voice of reason (the “it’s just the wind” friend).
One part that annoyed me was when the suspicious man warned his companion against speaking or even thinking about the supposed supernatural elements alert in the forest. He said it would give them power, make them more deadly. And yet, both men continued as they were, talking away about these forces.
The best parts of this story were it was short (I could have only dealt with so much of this) and the ending was not terrible. The men were, for the time being, saved, because the powers chose, instead, a peasant as a victim (I guess only so many victims were needed at any one time).
I like to imagine this as an allegory for insanity. Perhaps, these men were not meant for the great outdoors and began to imagine things. Perhaps, nature’s wonders played tricks with their minds. The Willows scare factor may have been minimal, but at least it can be viewed outside the straight and narrow.
Too Old Fashioned for Me
