About this listen

The Invisible Man: In what many refer to as one of the first and greatest science fiction thrillers, a mysterious stranger wanders into an inn, wrapped head-to-toe in bandages. What lies beneath the bandages is something even more mysterious. As Wells tackles issues of identity, deception, and the deterioration of the human mind, listeners will be drawn into the story of the mysterious man, whose own mistakes end up whisking him into a whirlwind of deceit, terror, and even murder. In the end, the question will be asked: when your sense of self and identity vanish, who will you become?

The Time Machine: After an ingenious inventor builds a device that is able to project him years into the future, he discovers a world no longer inhabited by creatures he once knew as humanity. These people have strange tendencies, similar to the ones he left behind, but something is missing, and when the people of this eerily-carefree society begin to come up missing, the puzzle only becomes more illusive. The Time Traveler has no choice but to investigate after his own machine vanishes, leading him to discover the truth behind the origin of intelligence. Is it inborn, or is intelligence birthed from circumstance and survival? If the inhabitants of this planet are peaceful, then who is kidnapping them? And what use do these people have with the Traveler’s time machine?

The War of the Worlds: What determines your future? Is it fate, or do you have a say in the matter? In what has come to be known as one of H.G. Wells’s most famous novels, the narrator is forced to ask this question. After a mysterious object crash lands in England, the inhabitants of Earth become aware of other intelligent life in the universe, and the threats they pose. What follows is chaos, the collapse of society, and a breathless chase. Try though they might, English society is unable to stand against the onslaught of Martians, and soon even the narrator begins to call everything into question.

These will always be favorites of mine even if parts of them might offend modern readers. They were written so long ago that a modern reader has little sense for the context for the world of H.G. Wells, so they should bear that in mind before dismissing him as a racist by modern standards. That's not to defend his views of race, but rather to explain that he was a product of his time.

Awesome sci-fi collection. I had heard of these classics, but never listened to them until recently. I see why these inspired so many movies; they are amazing.

I really liked how organized and easy to follow this collection was. Chapters, parts, and stories were all labeled very well making it very easy way to “jump back in” after taking a break from listening.

Science fiction, dystopian societies, and the underlying messages that are inevitably woven throughout the piece intrigue and inspire me. This collection of terrifying stories kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering how the author so accurately captured many of the things that we experience now yet wrote about so long ago. If it is not already part of a high school curriculum, it should be made available for all young adults to read and learn from.

I have read the classics, watched the movies, but nothing compares to the quality of this audiobook. The narrator brought a new level of enjoyment with his superb performance. Well done, highly recommend this anthology.

I was originally interested in this audiobook because War of The Worlds is one of my favorite movies. I decided to listen to the original as told by H.G. wells. I thought it was really cool that two other popular books of his were also included. And now, I understand why they recently did a movie on the Invisible Man too. Bravo H.G. Wells and the narrator that retold his classic stories.

Awesome Collection.

I could tell that this was older style of writing. Wells likes to write in first person as if he's reading a detailed journal of the main character which is fine once in a while, but gets a little monotonous. It was interesting that some of the movies I have seen of Time Machine and War of the World's were very similar to the book.

Enjoyable classic collection
