About this listen

A "dreamlike and compelling” tour de force (Chicago Tribune)—an astonishingly imaginative detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets from Japan’s forgotten campaign in Manchuria during World War II.

In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Loved the narration!

Any additional comments?

The storyline was complex and VERY imaginative. From reading some of the other reviews, it seems that people either love the narration or hate it. I really enjoyed that Mr. Degas was able to create such distinct voices for each of the characters. It made the audio easy to follow. I admit that some of the voices were a bit exaggerated, consistent with the perceived nature of the particular character, but for me, that was a plus. I enjoyed both the story and the performance.

The reader is the star - hurrah for Rupert Degas

Any additional comments?

OK< so I have to rave a bit about an actor. Rupert Degas was the reader of an audiobook I just finished listening to (thanks Liam O'Malley), "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami. The book was quite good - but Rupert Degas was UNBELIEVABLE as the many voices. His vocalizations of six different women and about four or five men were distinct, believable, full characterizations with tonal, phrasing, pitch, and vocal placement differences that were both subtle and delightful. I've never heard anything so masterfully done. Unbelievable. Just amazing. And then I found out he was the voices of many of the Thomas the Tank Engine characters! And Bob the Builder! And if you look at his wikipedia listing of video games he's contributed to you'll be floored. I have a new hero.

Was my first Murakami, couldn't get enough

I've now ventured through more of his books but this remains my favorite. Performance seems like it should be annoying, but somehow is just perfect instead.

loved the book not the narrator

I really enjoyed the writing but found the narrator really distracting and not in line with the tone of the book. I will never get another book with this narrator.

entertaining plot but comical narration

the narration (of every character besides the protagonist) was distracting....maybe it was suppose to be that exaggeratedly absurd to portray the whimsical plot

Don’t bother with audio book

I’m well on my way to reading every Muakami. I don’t know how this book was because it was literally unbearable. I thought countless times in the first few hours to stop listening but in denial forged forward because the story piqued my interest. But his lady voices really just did me in. I was embarrassed to listening to this guy - like, even on my headphones. Buy this book and read it. They should re-record this, seriously.

The audio aspect of this book was horrible.

There were times that I wanted to just skip ahead because of how annoying he would the make voices. Women don't have a high pitch obnoxious voice and shouldn't be read as such. The story is beautiful and I really enjoyed it and I would have enjoyed it even more if another person had done the audio.

Amazing narration

Thoroughly enjoyed listening this. Story is beautiful, mysterious and written in a beautiful way which keeps you hooked up as the small mysteries are unraveled slowly. Narration was outstanding! So many different voices, spoken out so convincingly, it really felt like I know who exactly is speaking just by hearing the voice.
At the end of the book, it left me wanting for more. I wish Mr.Okada's interesting life continued with more mysteries. I too much of anything makes you not liking it, this was just the right amount of pleasure.

Confusing

Found it a little confusing to follow along with but as I went along everything started to tie together.
