About this listen

The Wings of the Dove is a masterpiece by Henry James.

This 1902 novel tells the story of Milly Theale, an American heiress suffering from an incurable disease, who comes to Europe in search of happiness. Through Milly's experiences in London and the new friends she makes, some with honorable motives, while others are more self-interested, James examines the collision of the emerging New World and Europe.

American-born English author Henry James (1843-1916), was one of the founders and leaders of realism in fiction and is considered to be one of the great British novelists.

Boring book and poor narration

I couldn't take more than 1 hour of listening to this book. The narrator just drones on an on, in a slow monotone voice with awkward pauses in wrong places. When there's a conversation, it's very hard to tell who's speaking because all characters sounds the same. The book itself moves very slowly; long descriptions of feelings, intentions, thoughts with very little action or dialog. If you're a big fan of Henry James, it might be for you. If not, I would advise spending your money on something else.

great James but horrible reading

Do NOT buy this version. It sounds as if the narrator is reading the book for the first time: full of awkward pauses and stumbling mistakes and misreadings. Not even a hint at characterization, very monotonous reading. There are also extraneous noises in the background: coughing, turning pages.

Complete waste of money.

Narrative Aberration

I'm sorry to admit the price of this version was the instigation for it's purchase. Always listen to the sample before buying. A poor narrator or production can make a book impossible to listen to. This is the case here, a waste of a penny.

Broken Wings

Very tedious. No one lives happily ever afterwards. Henry if you knew people like these characters I feel sorry for you. How did you ever get through writing this novel?
