About this listen

Literary legend James A. Michener was "a Renaissance man, adventurous, inquisitive, unpretentious and unassuming, with an encyclopedic mind and a generous heart" (The New York Times Book Review). In this exceptional memoir, the man himself tells the story of his remarkable life and describes the people, events, and ideas that shaped it. Moving backward and forward across time, he writes about the many strands of his experience: his passion for travel; his lifelong infatuation with literature, music, and painting; his adventures in politics; and the hard work, headaches, and rewards of the writing life. Here at last is the real James Michener: plainspoken, wise, and enormously sympathetic, a man who could truly say, "The world is my home."

Though born as an orphan Mr. Michener related a very interesting autobiography. I plan to read his other writings. So should just about everyone else.
Bye for now, Glen Stinnett ;-)

Sometimes I wonder why I read autobiographies because part way through every one of them I start to dislike the very person I started to read about. But at some point I reconcile this with bits of wisdom I receive. This one was no exception. If you like Michener novels this pbook pulls them all together.

Learned alot

I have taken my best trips around the world and across time through this man’s masterful writings. And his own story may be the best of all! Thank you Mr. Michener for opening my own world!

Unparalleled story-teller and educator!!

This book has inspired and motivated me to live each day to the full. I wish I could have thanked mr. Michener for opening so many windows into our world to me.
Thank you, also, to the narrator. What a fine job he's done!

I wish I had known about this author when I was learning English. I also delighted in his subject matter. This is my second of his books. I liked Mexico and will continue with Texas.
I really enjoyed the stories he recounted of his life and persona. A true star that continues to shine through his works.
Rather sad to come to the end of the book. I admire his life. I see now why his books are so addictive. What a great man!

Clear matter of fact English writing

I have read several of Michener’s books and enjoyed each one especially Iberia and The Source. His memoir while not fiction is written in the same manner: lots of stories that carry the reader along on a definite path to a definite conclusion for a definite reason. Michener’s stories have something useful for people to know. Sometimes the stories were a little tedious in my opinion. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book and feel the 21 hours was well spent. The narration missed the mark mostly because his voice just didn’t sound like what I imagined Michener would sound like.

Just like his historical fiction

now I know why I love MICHENER so much. I also was a prolific hitchhiker in my youth. Also I've lived a lucky life, not a a life chasing riches.

I have not read most of his books. I love biographies but am suspicious of autobiographies and never indulge. But gratefully listened to this one and every page was gold.
It’s inspiring informative and full great insight from a great writer and even greater person. I shall listen again for it contains so much I am sure my mind and memory will benefit from another reading or listen.

Excellent
