Excellent historical fiction!

This is a book for older grade school children to adults. The vocabulary and some subject matter would make it difficult for most younger children. The story is very well written, clean of vulgar language and not overly graphic in regard to violence. The narrator does an impressive job of telling the story. As usual, Henty’s novel is an excellent way to study the history of a particular time through a mix of real and fictional characters in an engaging story.

One of the Best

This book was exciting and educating. G A Henty is one of my favorite authors and I could dive into any one of his books anytime, anywhere. These are great sources of historical fiction, done the right way, staying true to history while also making it enjoyable. I would recommend any of his books to young men who dream of being better than the status quo.

Hannibal and his elephants!

I was intrigued by this title because I didn’t know anything about Hannibal. I only knew that he fought with elephants and took them over snowy mountains. And I had a vague idea that he was badly defeated in the end.

In the movie Phantom of the Opera they are performing an opera on Hannibal. But aside from that I had no connection with his story or the Punic Wars so I was interested to find out the true account.

I was back-and-forth with whether or not I actually enjoyed the story. There were parts of it that were really interesting and then there was other portions that were just really dull. Because Henty is such a war buff he tends to include a lot of conflict details that just aren’t that interesting. I like the personal story aspects when they zoom in focus on one man or a group of men. The parts when they were taken captive and had to come up with a way of escape were the most riveting portions.

And the last few chapters get really exciting with the main characters love interest. I always appreciate that there’s always a happy ending for the main character. The valiant hero that is portrayed as Hannibal seems a little too good to be true, but it is nice to think that he was a man of integrity in a very dark era.

The reader is great! I love his voice. he also reads Henty’s book For the Temple. I wish he did more of Henty’s books!

ConsistentG.A.Henty-ExhilaratingStory/Good History

Consistent with all the G.A.Henty I have ever read or listened to, it's an ExhilaratingStory amid the backdrop of Good History. Love these novels completely.

The reading was as good as the best AudioDramas of G.A. Henty produced by Heirloom Audio, which are very worth every dime, although I still like them better because they are more dramatized. Nonetheless, I could not have asked for a better reading of this audiobook and the narrator would fit in beautifully with the Heirloom Audio readers. Enjoy these novels - they are my favorite of all the authors I have ever read, except maybe equivalent to the enjoyment of reading C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia when I was a child, and even more than J.R.R. Tolkein.

Slow narration, decent storyline

Story was pretty good but the narration was slow and dry. I listened at a faster speed.

Not so young

I bought this for my 11 year old son because he was interested in ancient Rome and especially Hannibal. However, I did not realize this book was written in 1887. The Victorian era prose was, shall we say, not to his liking. After reading the Publisher's Summary, I had for some reason thought the book was more current. Anyway, I would have liked to have been aware of this before buying it.

difficult to listen to

We found the narrator difficult to understand, and when following along in the book we noticed that he missed words altogether. After Dad recovered from his cold, he finished reading this one aloud for us. Loved the story, though. It was written in the 19th century, and therefore don't expect cultural sensitivity and scientific accuracy.
