About this listen

Ann Cleeves is back with the sixth book in her Shetland series featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, whom listeners will remember from Raven Black, White Nights, Red Bones, Blue Lightning, and Dead Water.

A group of old university friends leave the bright lights of London and travel to Shetland to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends. But one of them, Eleanor, disappears - apparently into thin air. It's midsummer, a time of light nights and unexpected mists. And then Eleanor's body is discovered lying in a small loch close to the cliff edge.

Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen the ghost of a local child who drowned in the 1920s. Her interest in the ghost had seemed unhealthy - obsessive, even - to her friends: an indication of a troubled mind. But Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there is more to Eleanor's death than they first thought. Is there a secret that lies behind the myth? One so shocking that someone would kill - many years later - to protect it?

Ann Cleeves' striking new novel is a quintessential whodunit with surprises at every turn.

Captivating plot!

I listened to this whole story in two days because it was that good. Read well, and written wonderfully. The characters are all interesting and complex and the plot was compelling, with interesting twists. Highly recommend it!

Good Story. Fair Production.

I adore Ann Cleeves stories, and this is a good one. However, the editing is awful with long pauses mid sentences that shouldn't be there. While I love the Scottish lilt, this performance was not great. Still, it doesn't change how much I love Jimmy Perez!

My favorite!!

I’ve listened to EVERY audiobook from Ann Cleeves. For some reason, I had skipped this one from the Shetland series! First of all, yes, the audiobook didn’t get edited for the pauses in narration. I’m not sure why but there are long pauses. But just hang in there and keep going because this book is fabulous. Kenny is my favorite narrator. He nails Jimmy Perez! But he also is great as women, English accent gents, and thick accent Shetlanders. Ann does such a beautiful job of placing the reader right in the middle of the incredible landscape of the Shetland Islands. I feel myself walking right thru the story. Also, I find myself chuckling often with the humor that goes along with the beloved characters. Who couldn’t love Sandy?! This is a great book! Had me guessing till the end! I loved the story!!!!

Another great Shetland Mystery

If you have read the previous books in the series, you will not be disappointed with this one. It's another wonderful trip to Shetland and another wonderful Jimmy Perez mystery. If you enjoy a great mystery with awesome character development in an exotic setting, you have come to the right place.

Excellent novel, less than excellent production

I’m a great fan of Ann Cleeves’s Shetland mysteries - I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each one. She does a masterful job of developing characters her readers enjoy getting to know and care about while weaving an exciting and suspenseful story. But the production values of this recording are not up to the usual excellent standards one is accustomed to in titles on Audible. There are strange and unexplained pauses throughout the recording, whose placement make no sense in the context of the narrative. This will not prevent me from purchasing additional titles from either this author or others, but I feel I must express my disappointment in the lower quality of production values of this one. Not what I usually expect from Audible.

Ghost Joke

A child ghost disappears into thin air. An island folk tale. College friends from England meet for a reunion in Shetland only to find how different they have become over the years, how distant. One is lost, murdered, and the others decide to stay on the island until Willow, lead investigator, and Jimmy Perez and Sandy discover what happened. Perez is doing better now after the pain and guilt around his fiancee's death. Willow sees how strong and independent an investigator he is. Sandy does well, adding good information to the case, and he sees an old sweetheart who again sparks his interest.

Great Story

First of all this is a fantastic story. It does help that I love the program on BBC based on this series of novels. It made it that much better.

But my issue is with the very long pauses by the narrator. They are so long that I actually had to check multiple times that I hadn't accidentally pressed paused. I understand the need for the pauses but 2 minutes is too long.

Will I buy more of this series? Definitely

a good book in the series

I like the character development of the authors having with the major characters in the book it'll be interesting to see if any drop in or drop out for a while. in comparing it to the TV series I think they had to add some characters in order to give it some depth to contemporary audiences but the audio performance reflects the book really well and was a good performance
