Publisher's summary

One of the 2019 Amazon.com Best Books of the Year

"In this charming listen, narrator Therese Plummer portrays Cassie Hanwell - a confident, talented firefighter whose solitary life is upended when her estranged mother asks her to relocate to Boston.... A wonderful story of forgiveness, friendship, love, and hope." (AudioFile Magazine)

From the New York Times best-selling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new audiobook about courage, hope, and learning to love against all odds.

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's a total pro at other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew - even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because love is girly, and it’s not her thing. And don’t forget the advice her old captain gave her: Never date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...and it means risking it all - the only job she’s ever loved, and the hero she’s worked like hell to become.

Katherine Center's Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt and healing tour de force about the strength of vulnerability, the nourishing magic of forgiveness, and the life-changing power of defining courage, at last, for yourself.

Critic reviews

"Oh, how I love Katherine Center’s writing...and her newest novel is a gem...a story that reminds us that the word emergency has, at its heart, a new beginning. Just read it, and thank me later.” (Jodi Picoult, New York Times best-selling author)

“...a sharp and witty exploration of love and forgiveness that is at once insightful, entertaining, and thoroughly addictive.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Great book but the pc content is unimportant

It was a great book. The characters were very interesting and developed well. Unfortunately putting race in the book was totally unnecessary. It didn’t matter what race anyone was. The unnecessary pc descriptions took away from the story.

good listen

The first part of the book was wordy and boring, but I'm glad I didn't give up on it. I really related to how Cassie dealt with her emotions and could see how I might make similar decisions if I was in her shoes. overall really enjoyed the book.

Emotional and happy too?

Absolutely fabulous story. So many firefighting culture details, author really paints the scenes and interactions so well. Absolutely love the girl, who seems almost perfect until we realize her wound and the cute guy she falls in love with. A story about love and being a human, empathy, navigating change and gender politics, loving after trauma, etc etc. The author has a grasp on psychology and hope and STORY. Thank you.

Loved it! I'm a new fan of Katherine Center

I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this audiobook! The characters were very likeable and I listened with bated breath as the story unfolded. I was rooting for Cassie and eager to learn the back stories. The romance was fun and dialog was clever.

Therese Plummer is a joy to listen to as a narrator. I have sought out audiobooks she's reading, regardless of genre. She's that good! The Boston accents in this one kept me smiling!

After listening to "How to Walk Away" and "Things You Save in a Fire,", I downloaded her newest one and can't wait to dig in.
