About this listen

Copenhagen author Hannah is the darling of the literary community and her novels have achieved massive critical acclaim. But nobody actually reads them, and frustrated by writer's block, Hannah has the feeling that she's doing something wrong.

When she expresses her contempt for genre fiction, Hanna is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in 30 days. Scared that she will lose face, she accepts, and her editor sends her to Húsafjöður; a quiet, tight-knit village in Iceland, filled with colourful local characters - for inspiration.

But two days after her arrival, the body of a fisherman's young son is pulled from the water...and what begins as a search for plot material quickly turns into a messy and dangerous investigation that threatens to uncover secrets that put everything at risk...including Hannah.

This is an incredible book once you get over how much you dislike the protagonist.

I can see where the lower reviews are coming from but…

I was absolutely blown away by this book.

Diana Croft lifts this already intriguing and thought-provoking plot to new heights. She breathes life into the main character, Hannah, with a perfect blend of sarcasm and self-pity. This book is a masterpiece of action and smoothly transitions from one scene to the next. Diana's characters evolve as the story unfolds and I am left hanging onto every word until the very poetic and sad ending.

Special kudos to her delivery and pronunciation of Icelandic phrases.

Great story, with a couple of twists, just as I thought I knew who did it. A really good book, hard to put down. And the narrator was really good.

A really good crime story.

Witty and unexpected storyline that still had me right to the end. The MC was unusual and good to see a more interesting group of characters

Interesting story and setting

The characters were vague. I wanted to know more about them. The story was to easy.

It made me wonder.

I now understand the other reviews about how difficult it was to listen to a book where the main character is so dislikable. It doesn’t help the at the very end she “sees the light” most of the book is either a totally terrible person.

The main character

I'm not going to finish this book because I don't like the characters. I made it to chapter 5 and finally put the book down.

Not for me

The protagonist was so deeply unlikeable that it made the book hard to read through to the end - there really is a limit to following a narrative at whose heart is a horrible, self-absorbed person who seems, and was in my view, beyond redemption. I only finished it to know what happened (of course). Story itself wasn’t bad.

Such an unlikeable protagonist that it prejudiced review of the story itself
