Publisher's summary
This Boy and His Mother tells the story of the gay missionary—mentioned in Elder Holland's "Behold Thy Mother"—who returned home early after being sexually assaulted and the hope and healing he found through Jesus Christ, fostered by the faith and testimony of his tenacious mother.
This Boy and His Mother: Healing from Trauma as a Gay Latter-day Saint chronicles Preston Jenkins' journey back to faith and activity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mentioned in Elder Holland's general conference talk titled "Behold Thy Mother", Preston is the "young man who entered the mission field worthily, but by his own choice, returned home early due to same-sex attraction and some trauma he experienced in that regard... [and] often the long, dark nights of the soul were faced by just this boy and his mother".
Speaking with authenticity, Preston offers gospel insights gleaned from his experiences involving same-sex attraction, sexual and emotional abuse, an early return from an LDS mission, mental illness, and the eventual completion of a mission. Hope, faith, and never-failing charity are strikingly displayed. So, too, is the sufficient grace of Jesus Christ to holistically heal all wounds. This boy "knows he owes much to many, but he knows he owes the most to two messianic figures in his life, two who bore him and carried him, labored with him and delivered him—his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his determined, redemptive, absolutely saintly mother".

Our unconscious thought patterns determine our relationships, our spiritual life, and our connection to God to a much greater extent than we know. That’s an alarming thought, because the subconscious mind is a mysterious realm that is really difficult to access and influence...right? No. It’s really not! And it’s the most urgent and impactful thing we can do. This book will show you how.

Story
Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a season, but others shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned at best and overwhelmed and hopeless at worst. We quietly start to wonder about the reality of God’s goodness and why he allows us to suffer and experience grief and loss. Lysa TerKeurst understands this deeply. But after many tears, godly counseling, and prayerful seeking, she's also discovered that our disappointments can be the divine appointments our souls need to radically encounter God.

Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Robert MacFarlane has written that language does not just register experience, it produces it. Our religious language in particular informs and shapes our understanding of God, our sense of self, and the way we make sense of our challenging path back to loving heavenly parents. Unfortunately, to an extent we may not realize, our religious vocabulary has been shaped by prior generations whose creeds, in Joseph Smith's words, have filled the world with confusion. I make all things new, proclaimed the Lord. Regrettably, many are still mired in the past, in ways we have not recognized.

“I want to believe, I want to have hope, but....” Pastor and author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not? You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good.

Pastor and speaker Shane Pruitt shines a light on this and other Christian cliches that upon further inspection are actually unbiblical lies that keep far too many believers stuck in spiritual immaturity.

Story
You long to serve God with grace and strength, to reflect Christ in every word and action. Yet you find yourself continually struggling to bring that vision to life in your daily walk. At our very core, every one of us is a "twisted sister" within whom the flesh and spirit battle constantly for control. We are afflicted with spiritual schizophrenia, the disconnect between our "good girl" desire to put Jesus first and our "bad girl" realities that crowd our thoughts and push him out of the way.

Story
"Over the last four decades, I've met one-on-one with thousands of men. Most of them know that Jesus promised "a rich and satisfying life" (John 10:10), but too many are confused about what that looks like. In fact, I'd estimate that 90 percent of Christian men lead lukewarm, stagnant, defeated lives—and they hate it. When men try to put into words what's holding them back, they invariably describe one or more of seven symptoms. But you can experience a powerful life transformed by Christ. I'll tell you how." Pure testimony hard won
This is possibly the most beautifully expression of pure testimony in the healing power that can only be found in Christ. I am in awe of Preston’s story of beauty for ashes and the mother that fought prayerfully by his side to find healing for her son. This is a powerful book.

I absolutely loved this book. No doubt parts of it are super heavy, but that raw honesty allowed for much deeper empathy on my part. This is a must read for all people of faith. This story will show you the matchless power of our Savior. Preston, thank you for sharing your story!

Inspiring and uplifting!
Preston’s journey is so encouraging for anyone struggling with their faith. This book left me with a renewed sense of commitment in making and keeping covenants with God. I love how Preston said, “what we want isn’t always what is best for us.” No matter who you are and what you struggle with, God will transform you into your best self if you choose to follow Him.

I've heard this story before.
This is a beautiful story if faith and belief. l know of many, including myself who have followed in these footsteps. The most important question is what will life be like 15 to 20 years from now. I lasted 27 years until I was widowed.
Foremost we must understand we cannot judge others in their life's path. Life has an interesting way of changing. My life's reality now (without religion) is amazingly blessed with great spiritual peace.
