Publisher's summary

Storytelling isn't complicated. We'll prove it to you.

Do you have an amazing idea for a novel but you struggle to get words on the page? Maybe the problem isn't writer's block. Maybe you need a writing process.

Publishing veterans and best-selling authors Zach Bohannon and J. Thorn share their proven system for developing a plan that will bridge the gap between a collection of random notes and a cohesive first draft.

This comprehensive book will teach you the foundations of fiction: Plot, Structure, Genre, Theme, Character, and World.

Discover:

  • Why you need a system to finish a first draft whether you plot or pants
  • What Aristotle said about storytelling thousands of years ago that still applies today
  • How studying Star Wars can make you a better writer
  • What some of the most prolific authors believe about the craft
  • How all stories can be reduced to three components
  • Which archetypes create a more engaging reader experience
  • How the Hero's Journey is alike and different than the Virgin's Promise
  • Why you should cast your characters like a movie producer

Developed over 10 years and applied on millions of words of fiction, Thorn and Bohannon will show you how to layer your approach and build a fantastic story from the ground up.

Shockingly Bad on Multiple Levels

The audio book is 3 hours and 13 minutes long. I am currently 2 hours and 30 minutes into it and I still have NO idea what the "Three Story Method" is. None. Not even an inkling. And it's not that the authors have gone to great lengths to describe it, but I'm simply too dense to understand it. No, they haven't even TRIED to explain it. Don't you think an overview of this "system" should be mentioned early on so we have some inkling where this book is going? Instead, the book meanders on and on, simply quoting other sources ad nauseam. It has no path, no structure, no coherence whatsoever. It's as though the authors said, "Let's just cram a bunch of quotes into a book and then give it a tantalizing title that has nothing to do whatsoever with the content."

And to make matters worse, the production quality is just as painful. It's read by one of the authors himself on a cheap microphone that is constantly clipping. And then no post-production was used, as he gives a long pause and then big gasp for air between every... single... sentence.

Hard pass.

It's bad

To be brief (unlike the book)... The authors talk around the three story method more than they talk about it. I'm half way through and still have zero clue about what it is.

I hate this eight chapters in

a lot of self-help books tell you how they're different ly a self-help book for writers it seems I don't know I'm a chapters in and he hasn't said one thing original or even beginning to be smart or anything I personally hate it he said in chapter 8 there's going to start and then he started referencing old other works again nothing new until eight chapters in and it's still questionable whether one word is going to be original or helpful or even begin to explain what they're talking about but I personally hate the writer of this book for wasting a chapters of my life the beginning should maybe be chapter 9 I haven't gotten there yet I hate this book so much it's a terribly written book whether or not it has good points after chapter 9 I don't know but the first eight chapters are talking about how great it is and that's the sign of a piss poor book made this authors Live a long life knowing that I do not enjoy his Works
