About this listen

Three victims. One method. One motive.

Grab a badge and a gun and strap in for a ride that’s “full of suspense from the beginning to the end….” (Readers Abode). When dead bodies start piling up, Detective Madison Knight suspects that her city has a serial killer — but the quest for justice isn’t going to be an easy one. Everyone — including her own partner, her sergeant, and the police chief — are working against her.

“Arnold has written one of the best female cops that I’ve ever read… Madison is just one of those characters that will stay with you.” (Harlie’s Books)

A woman is found strangled in her bed, and Detective Madison Knight doesn’t think it’s anything more than an isolated incident. But when another woman’s body is discovered in a park, killed with the same brand of neckties, she can’t ignore the similarities between the two murders. Still, it’s not until a third victim surfaces that Madison really starts to fear the worst: The city of Stiles just may have a serial killer.

Catching the murderer isn’t going to be easy, though. She’s facing pressure from the sergeant and the chief to close the case — even if it means putting an innocent man behind bars — and a partner who is more interested in saving his marriage than doing his job. If there’s justice to be had, Madison may have to go this alone.

So-so narrator

Not a fan of the narrator. Tried so hard to pay attention but kept losing interest due to the blandness.

What do you do if your daughter gets pregnant?

Well if you’re involved in a “church” you obviously kick her or of your house: she has made a mistake and having no food or shelter or safety will make her see the error of her ways. In addition being forced to give birth to a child she doesn’t want is also punishment. The child, suffering from poor nutrition and being unwanted is just a by product of this. I see this used as a plot device so often. What is wrong with this culture that hates children that much.

In any case things were going along fine with this story until the last plot twist…then it all fell apart.

loved it

I absolutely loved this story. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the narrator's voice of Blake. As I'm assuming he is going to become a major character in The following books. I think she's trying to give him some kind of accent and it made it more annoying. But the story over all amazing and the narrator over all did a great job.

One of the very few audiobooks I could not finish

I've been listening to a lot of science fiction and fantasy lately and felt like I needed a genre break and stumbled across this one in my library and it sounded promising, boy was I wrong. First, the main character is not likeable at all. It felt like she was trying too hard to be smart, funny, tough, witty, etc and coming off grating with all of them. The chemistry between her and her partner was nonexistent but I feel like I was supposed to believe something was there. The narrator has a staccato delivery that was hard to listen to. There was almost no inflection in her voice and at times, I felt myself wondering if it was AI generated. Her voice was pleasant enough, but the reading style started driving me crazy. At one point she tried giving a character a drawl that disappeared and reappeared randomly through the conversation. Ugh. I gave up on it after 2 hours, not really caring whodunnit or where this was going.
