About this listen

Throughout history and in just about every religion the number seven has held significance. And in the small town of Briar Glen the secret of the seven will forever haunt you.

Blake Wilder is plagued with nightmares from her dark and twisted past.

Fourteen years ago, her entire family was taken from her.

Her parents murdered and her sister taken.

At the age of 22, Blake joined the FBI in hopes of one day discovering the truth behind the mysteries of her own past.

The past few years since joining the FBI, Blake has seen many gruesome and nightmare-inducing cases.

Now, she faces what may be the most grim and mysterious case of her career. A case that will take her to Briar Glen.

Briar Glen is a sleepy and affluent town on the coast of Washington. But this idyllic seaside town is far from what it appears to be. As Blake digs deeper into the case to unravel the strange mystery behind the three female victims, she finds that little is as it seems.

People are not who they say they are, and there are killers who lurk in the shadows. The more she learns about the town, the more she realizes that there is an evil darkness that underlies everything in this place.

This is a town built on blood and paid for with human lives.

There's no playing it safe when you’re hunting monsters.

And there are so many here in Briar Glen that one false move could be Blake's last.

Excellent crime solving mysteries!

These books are well written, intriguing, keep my interest, and I want to listen to the next one immediately! I have thoroughly enjoyed the first 3 I’ve listened to. Please get the whole series and any other books this author has written.

meh, just meh

This is the kind of book that tells you, rather than shows you. This leaves the characters feeling one dimensional, and makes it hard to get invested in the story.

Almost every discussion of the MC's supposed best friend focused on how she's easy, over and over. Did you get that she's slutty? Super slutty? Did you pick up on that yet?

I just can't bring myself to give the rest of the series a shot.

Fun listen overall

A fun listen overall. Random word mispronunciations were distracting from being emerged in storyline. Story good company.

Can't get past the narrator

I'll try reading the book. A great story can be ruined when narrated by the wrong person. That's what did it for me. Just couldn't listen past the first hour or so. I can't even comment on the story itself although my feeling is it was taking too long to get to the point.

Disappointed.

The story sounded really great and started off with a bang, but then it just sort of fell flat. The narrator's stilted and clumsy reading manner made the banter seem contrived and awkward. Different narration might make a big difference. I'm disappointed.

predictable

Too much extra dialog and completely predictable. Seems like a first time author, because there was no depth.

So good I want to read the whole series :)

No spoilers
I rarely leave reviews, but there are none here, and this book certainly warrants some good feedback. :)
I read and listen to several books a week, and very rarely do I find a beginning to a new series that I enjoy as much as this one. My preferred genres for audiobooks are psychological thriller, and police procedural. I also usually prefer really intense stories without the clutter of badly written romance (this happens far too often).
This story was mostly an easy-read (not intense) FBI/police procedural mystery. Although it wasn't a psychological thriller, the characters/relationships were developed well enough to satisfy the psychological aspect for me. The protagonist is well developed: capable, clever, and funny. The other characters really add to the story effectively, and are enjoyable.
There is also a very slight romantic addition, which instead of bothering me, really enhances the storyline.
The hook at the end did not leave me dissatisfied, but rather wanting to read the next book. It's so exciting to find a series with several books to look forward to.
Also, the narrator, Brittany Goodwin, does an excellent job. I would love to listen to the series narrated by her. I hope audible gets the rest (right now I only see 2 here in NZ on Audible). I'll have to read the rest on Kindle, because I probably can't wait. :D

The narrator is awful!

The storyline was good. But I could hardly get through the book. The lady narrating needs some work. She's too excitable when it's not needed, and not excitable enough when it is needed. It really makes it hard to discern what is supposed to be inner-dialog... bummer. There is no way I can listen to the other books if it's the same narrator.
