About this listen

Change is afoot at Kings Lake Central police station. A most unexpected new detective inspector takes up his post this Monday morning, and the oldest detective in the place takes a momentous decision.

Around them, other officers are considering their own situations, and even the building itself seems to be facing an uncertain future. But life and death go on, nevertheless, and by lunchtime someone will make a grim discovery on the Norfolk saltmarshes. A stranger seems to have suffered a slow and agonizing death out there.

As the team from Kings Lake uncover his story, they reveal another, much older one with its origins far back in the previous century. In the tide that governs the affairs of men, it seems, love and loss, betrayal and revenge are timeless themes. Fans of Colin Dexter, P. D. James, and Ruth Rendell have all found much to enjoy in DC Smith's previous investigations.

I just love DC Smith. His humor is right up my alley. My only complaint is they make your 50s sound like your late 70s. Being 65 I find it a bit disconcerting.

I've enjoyed every book I've listened to from this author and his excellent narrator. I must say though that there's a certain sadness and anticipated loss as the shrewd detective grows older. He's quite likeable.

Another good title from Petwr Grainger

The events were well crafted to form and well developed plot and the ending was not really what I thought it would be! The performance is great!

Great story!

Smith was very similar in style to previous stories in this series. likeable but rather ponderous and progress is systematic and not like say Poirot or Marple with unexpected features.

Clever Plot bot not so Exciting

I enjoy all the books in this series. DC Smith is a kind but tough detective. It's refreshing.

depth of character

Thrilling character development with rich and full story complexity. Lastly, the series to this point has an a uncanny nurturing quality I suspect will carry on...oh, and, the love interest is taking its time, which is charming.
