About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Time of the Child by Niall Williams, read by Dermot Crowley

"I am such a fan of Niall Williams." —Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Tom Lake

From the author of This Is Happiness, a compassionate, life-affirming novel about the Christmas season that transforms the small Irish town of Faha.

Doctor Jack Troy was born and raised in Faha, but his responsibilities for the sick and his care for the dying mean he has always been set apart from the town. His eldest daughter, Ronnie, has grown up in her father’s shadow, and remains there, having missed one chance at love – and passed up another offer of marriage from an unsuitable man.

But in the Advent season of 1962, as the town readies itself for Christmas, Ronnie and Doctor Troy’s lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care. As the winter passes, father and daughter’s lives, the understanding of their family, and their role in their community are changed forever.

Set over the course of one December in the same village as Williams’ beloved This Is Happiness, Time of the Child is a tender return to Faha for listeners who know its charms, and a heartwarming welcome to new listeners entering for the very first time.

The love of the child by daughter and father

I loved the healing of prejudice against a child born out of wedlock through the power of caring

The very top of my Audio listens.

I probably have about 200 Audio titles in my library. I read mostly historical fiction, biographies, and non-fiction adventures.
In browsing for my next book I encountered this interesting title and noted almost all 5 star reviews. I'm most glad that I purchased it as I have truly loved the writing, the story line, and the narrator. I finished the book today, December 24. Interestingly the book concludes on Christmas Eve. It all seemed to fit.

The prose is nearly poetry

The story is apropos for this season of Advent. A beautiiful listening experience. Beauty, truth and goodness in a story of love.

The writing was exquisite and precise, the readers rhythm and tone a perfect match to the story

Wonderful characters and heartfelt storytelling. A charming sequel to “This is happiness” with the same humor, pathos and affection for the rhythms of small town Irish life. A must read.

Superb writing and terrific narration

Just delightful. The characters and the era are written with humor and sensitivity, while the narrator is just perfect for it. Highly recommended!

A slower start than This Is Happiness but then….wonderful.

I had a bit of trouble with the “lulling me to sleep” cadence of the narrator. It was partly my fault for the .95 speed to be sure I could understand him, but he certainly delivered at the crucial places. I have the tears to prove it.
This is the perfect timing for this story - post-election and the beginning of Advent. It restores the hope for mankind.

A lovely return to Faha.

Returning to the village of Faha was lovely, revealing the complexities of small-town life and the intricacies of its people. The prose and storyline are luminous, and the narration is impeccable.
