About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Time of the Child by Niall Williams, read by Dermot Crowley

"I am such a fan of Niall Williams." —Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Tom Lake

From the author of This Is Happiness, a compassionate, life-affirming novel about the Christmas season that transforms the small Irish town of Faha.

Doctor Jack Troy was born and raised in Faha, but his responsibilities for the sick and his care for the dying mean he has always been set apart from the town. His eldest daughter, Ronnie, has grown up in her father’s shadow, and remains there, having missed one chance at love – and passed up another offer of marriage from an unsuitable man.

But in the Advent season of 1962, as the town readies itself for Christmas, Ronnie and Doctor Troy’s lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care. As the winter passes, father and daughter’s lives, the understanding of their family, and their role in their community are changed forever.

Set over the course of one December in the same village as Williams’ beloved This Is Happiness, Time of the Child is a tender return to Faha for listeners who know its charms, and a heartwarming welcome to new listeners entering for the very first time.

The prose is nearly poetry

The story is apropos for this season of Advent. A beautiiful listening experience. Beauty, truth and goodness in a story of love.

Niall’s wording. His “turns of phrases” and gossamer wit

Doing a portrait due soon for Christmas so not enough time to expound. This was such a masterful expression of the sinews, streams, currents around birth, LIFE and death as Buddhists would put it, his palpable grasp of what comprises loss, the natures of suffering, the surprises of human touch, His intimacy of telling us about trees and tides, his initial description of Mrs Pendergast for instance - the small and large seeming events - the intimacy of relating Mary’s and Jude’s glances and goodness, their earnestness, industry and forbearance separating herding the cattle, what just that segment portended - the smashing elbows and ALL of it - blew me away.

The gentle story and the beautiful language which added music and magic to the story.

A really difficult time getting into the story not knowing what to expect if this is my first Williamson book. Abandon this book to listen to two others, but I came back to finish and I’m so glad that I did.

The story The baby was discovered, and what I initially thought was a detail shifted into a beautiful meditation on life, death, and the moment of true and understanding that we all live for.

A Classic!

I’m struggling to describe this beautiful story to you! The characters were real, their dilemmas and challenges quietly epic. Just listen to this story, it’s performed brilliantly, it’s lyrical and moving and unforgettable. It’s worthy of the credit.

A slower start than This Is Happiness but then….wonderful.

I had a bit of trouble with the “lulling me to sleep” cadence of the narrator. It was partly my fault for the .95 speed to be sure I could understand him, but he certainly delivered at the crucial places. I have the tears to prove it.
This is the perfect timing for this story - post-election and the beginning of Advent. It restores the hope for mankind.

Everyday Irish life, lived beautifully

The beautiful writing…the way the characters’ thoughts and feelings were conveyed through Irish language and custom.

Every sentence was poetry.

Good book for the faithless. Not too precious. Slow to develop but worth it. Funny in places.
