About this listen

What if we could buy a vow to right our wrongs?

For Nedra Phillips, the strain of portraying a strong black woman to outsiders is finally taking its toll on her. Her marriage to her college sweetheart has begun to fizzle out, with conversations dwindling down to nothing and intimacy becoming sporadic at best.

Unwilling to endure the stigma of being a 30-something divorcee, she does everything in her power to hold onto her marriage, but Chris isn't just on a different page, he's in a whole other book entirely.

Despite their disconnect, her vows meant something to her, and marriage is supposed to be forever. When all seems lost, she makes a last-ditch effort in hopes of generating results, but what exactly does a Hail Mary look like between friends and lovers?

Jermaine Hawkins is nearing the end of a prominent career playing professional basketball and is ready to put his retirement plan into action. That plan includes many things, but most important on the list is putting an end to his status as a hermit and starting a family.

A chance encounter with a firecracker of a woman makes him think he's found his capital F. But whether that F is for "future" or "frustrating" is to be determined. Can Jermaine convince Nedra that everything happens for a reason while also getting her to give him a chance at something real?

EXCELLENT book!

Yo...Chencia has TALENT. This book was SO good. The narration made it difficult to push through, but the story made it FULLY worth it. Can’t wait to check out more of her work!

Great Book!!! Horrible Narrator!!!

I absolutely loved To Buy a Vow! This was such a heartwarming love story. It pulls you in from page one. I want to say Chris did Nedra dirty but, he really didn't. I understand why he asked for a divorced but, the way he went about it was all kinds of wrong. He definitely should've handled that better. But, as the old saying goes, when one door closes another one opens. Jermaine was the Mr. Right for Nedra. They were perfect for one another. While the book was great, the narrator was horrible. It was narrated by Denise Wallace which, I found out is a pseudonym for Machelle Williams. She narrated a book I listened to a few months ago and I said then I would NEVER bye another book narrated by her. To say I was pissed off when I found out who she was is an understatement. I had no idea narrators performed under pseudonyms. Ugh! Anywho, this book was black romance personified. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

A Marriage Break Up Is Hard

Marriage is hard and sometimes it just don’t work out but there is a way to dissolve your marriage with some grace. Unfortunately Nedra’s husband Chris failed on this.

In this read we met Nedra Phillips - a gun enthusiast - who is married at the beginning of the read. She is mad and confused as to why her life is going the way it is when she meets our hero. Our hero, Jermaine Hawkins - is an NBA star at a crossroads in his career.

In this read I felt the pain of Nedra coming off of the page. It was a painful but realistic view of a breaking down of a marriage in the beginning of the read. So realistic as a read you have a sense of relief when she “snaps” out of the fight for her marriage stage she was in. I think it is fair to say that I despise Chris. He was selfish in the handling of intimate moments with Nedra. I was very satisfied with the “sonning” that Jermaine gave out to him in the end.

I loved how in touch Jermaine was with his feelings and what the universe is showing him. I especially loved the thought surrounding rebounds. The spicy scene was good, I do wish we could have got some more relationship building being played out on the page. There was a lot of use of the eye description of everyone having “Amber'' and Jermaine sounded a bit too “hotepy” with the nickname “goddess.” 3 Stars

A word about the audio performance is boring. The narrator sounded like she was just reading and not performing the story.

I Really Would Have Enjoyed This Story More.....

....If Not for the narration....this was a really good story...BUT, that narrator ....she’s terrible! I can appreciate the way her ex-husband was man enough to realize their relationship had run its course...
