About this listen

A NEW SOLO NOVEL IN DAVID WEBER'S NYT BEST-SELLING HONORVERSE

“It is our duty to pay for our liberty with our own blood. The freedom that we shall win through our sacrifice and exertions, we shall be able to preserve with our own strength.” —Subhas Chandra Bose

Lieutenant Brandy Bolgeo has come home from the Battle of Hancock station wounded in both body and spirit.

She will need months to regenerate her lost leg, but how long will it take to heal her heart?

She’s come home to find that her wounds, her ship’s brutal damage, the deaths of so many friends, were the fault of an arrogant, aristocratic coward who broke and ran in the face of the enemy. Who left her ship to pay the price for his craven desertion under fire. And whose powerful political allies are determined to protect and preserve him at any price.

Love the Perspective

Yes, we knew the bones of the story. So happy to hear it from others point of view. Enriches the experience.

Not an Honor Harrington novel

Honor only appears as a secondary character. The story revolves around past events, and while it's fun to spend time with old favorites I knew the vast majority of the plot beforehand. It seems to be, perhaps, a jumping off point for a series centered around a new character, who not for nothing is an engineer.
It's fun and I enjoyed Johnson's performance enormously as always.
According to the author's note this was the intention. Future installments will expand upon past events and characters.
I would have preferred a brand new story.

Short Story with Copy-pasted filler from other books

I'm 11 hours into this 17 hour book and the character it's supposedly about may have had an hour of time with the rest being copy-paste of previously released books.

It's a short story with massive amounts of already released filler

Great Story

This was a great story with a nice tie in to the earlier books. It's also nice to hear about what else was going on while Honor was doing other things.

Replay of old text but adds context and depth to previous characters and scenes

I am in absolute awe of the honorverse series. It has captivated my attention for years now, but I must say I am disappointed with this new book. Using the term, NEW isn’t correct because it is entirely snips of previous books played out.

I realize the intent is to add context to background stories and what not but I had sincerely hoped for a continuation of the story line. To each their own, but I am left disappointed and I feel like my money spent on this book was a waste because I’m rereading material that I’ve already purchased.

Rerun

Was just an expanded rehash of earlier story. A total waste of money. I loved the series and was happy for another episode. But reruns are just a scam on the reader.

Just a rehash of an earlier story.

I was very disappointed with this book because it was just a rehash of book 4, Field of Dishonor. I was expecting a continuation of the Honor story because it was listed at book 17, not book 4.1. There was very little new material, even less was relevant to The continuing story. I usually enjoy stories from this author, and especially this story line, but in the future I will be much more cautious in reviewing the comments before I purchase.

Not a full novel. Would recommend the series but not this.

Leading up to this book’s release I re-listened to all 14 mainline honorverse books and found them solid as before. The best space naval combat I’ve found anywhere, combined with strong writing, drama, politics and intrigue. Only dragged down by the author’s bizarre political biases and the most cringe relationship in any book/series I’ve ever finished (Harrington & Whitehaven).

With that background, this book was not worthy of being a full novel. It could have been reduced in length by 70% and been a novella in a set like the worlds of honor books. Most it’s runtime was direct retelling of scenes from previous books.
