About this listen

Becoming a director is not just about making a film, webseries, commercial, or music video. The opportunity to direct for television is not a given because you’ve successfully completed a project in another medium. Turning your passion into your profession requires the ability to make transitions at the exact moment a pivot is needed, with creativity and confidence. This book helps directors across all mediums shape their career with targeted anecdotes, worksheets, and other resources, all of which fall into three designated categories: how-to, self-help, and inspiration.

Pete! Thank you so much for writing this book and sharing your journey. You were the tech instructor for my sight and sound class, and seeing my mentor Theo on the Let’s Shoot podcast inspired me to get familiar with your journey.

Although I am looking to expand my career into writing, I use the lessons in your book as tools to keep moving forward and keep creating. They were instrumental in helping me finish my thesis film, and I continue to follow in yours, Seith’s, Theo’s, and Christina’s giant steps. Thanks for spreading the message and the love.

This was a phenomenal book! I loved the honesty, tips, and instructions provided by Pete Chatmon. My takeaways were to build honest and genuine relationships and understand that is the true way to be successful in the entertainment industry. I loved his distinction that it's more important to "nurture rather than network" when connecting with individuals. Networking always came off as fake to me, but the way Pete explained how to interact with those in the industry seems much more effective and a way to build real and genuine friendships.
It was refreshing that his journey didn't result in completing 1 or 2 steps to success. There were hurdles, disappointments, setbacks, mistakes, mishaps, lessons learned and eventually achieving goals that weren't even part of the original plan. His perseverance was truly encouraging to me and I am appreciative of what I gained. I would say getting the physical book would be helpful since there are some additional worksheets in the book I could use. Nevertheless, the book gets two thumbs up from me.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in the entertainment industry.

Great training with an honest and real approach

So many Hollywood success stories are from a time when Hollywood, and the world, operated so differently, it's hard to relate or learn much from their journey from dreamer to Director.

Pete is a real life success story for our generation. His advice, example, honesty, and humility show what it takes to make it as a director in the current Hollywood climate. No quick overnight success. It's hard work. Dedication. Talent. Intentionality. So much encouragement for what I am already doing right, and advice on what I can be doing better. A must read for any aspiring or early career director. Over a decade into my directing career and I learned so much to take with me into my next transition.
