About this listen

This is a plus-length novel - more than 100,000 words long.

A woman trapped in the past. A dark, intense warrior who claims she is his wife. Will Caroline survive her stay in the parallel universe into which she has fallen? Or will she be forever...trapped in time?

Dr. Caroline Lambert has a PhD in astro-temporal physics but no clue about matters of the heart. Married to her work, she has built a machine called PORTAL, capable of opening a window into other universes. She believes it is only for observation, so imagine her horror when she finds herself sucked through the window and right into a whole other world - a world that seems stuck in the past, around the time of the Victorian era.

Now, Caroline must deal with hoop skirts and elaborate etiquette, not to mention all the dangers of the past. It's a minefield of antiquated social mores and poisons used as medicines and cosmetics. But perhaps the most perplexing problem is the husband she has somehow acquired - a tall, dark Blood Kindred named Richard who claims she is his wife and refuses to let her go. For in this universe, the Kindred arrived 200 years earlier than in her own time, and they have made their way into polite society...as Richard seems determined to make his way into Caroline's heart.

Will Caroline ever find her way back to her own time and universe? Will she succumb to Richard's charms and give in to the big Blood Kindred who claims her as his own? And what about the scheming mother she has in this world who is determined that she will leave Richard for a viscount of questionable morals? Caroline doesn't know what to do, she only knows that if she cannot somehow open another window into her own world she will be forever...trapped in time.

Eh!

While I have enjoyed most of Evangeline Anderson’s stories, there are some series I wish she would focus on more than the Kindred. I feel like this is a good example of, for lack of a better phrase, a “cookie cutter” historical romance. That is just my opinion on this story alone. I hadn’t intended on purchasing it, but was interested in the Kindred Tales book that follows. At the start of that book, there was a recommendation stating the story, while stand-alone might be better understood if this story was read/heard first.

While I know Ms. Anderson is not a writer by first trade, having read multiple times that her starting career was in Radiology, as I listen to more of her books (and am sure it stops my flow when reading), she has a few grammatical glitches here and there that grate on my nerves, personally. Example: the use of phrases like “it felt realer” when the correct statement should be “it felt more real” and similar phrases. No offense intended. Just watch commercials … they do the same thing.

I have found myself listening to the Kindred Tales more than the Brides of the Kindred series, lately. I credit this to the excellent narration done by Mackenzie Cartwright. The male who narrates the Brides of the Kindred books doesn’t do the best job with the female voices, his whispering “inner thoughts” gives me a “somebody is watching you from the closet plotting your demise” creepy feeling. He could use his normal voice, since most, if not all, “thoughts” are denoted as thoughts either before or after each thought. I appreciate that Ms. Cartwright does not follow the same pattern. I find her voice and speech patterns much more soothing (and don’t have to check under my bed and in my closet for monsters before I try to get to sleep). Also, Ms. Cartwright has a way of bringing a more light-hearted joy to the recurring characters, which matches more closely with the way I interpreted the characters when I read the books. (I’ll give the male Brides of Kindred narrator at least one positive … I like his interpretation of Yipper better.)

Hope this helps. Don’t know if I can update, if needed, after I listen to the next book, “Time to Heal”, as to whether I agree that this book is essential or extremely helpful to tie the story of the next book together.

Another Twilight Zone saga

I am really loving these stories! Evangeline has a Rod Serling imagination. The next book should be good since it is a continuation from this one. Glad that this book was recommended first before the next book. Love the villains, heroes and plot! Narrator was excellent!

Kindred Period Drama

I loved this Kindred period-esque story. "Time" travel, mistaken identity, love, and culture shock in a Victorian steampunk style setting, what fun!
