About this listen

All of Patrick O'Brian's strengths are on parade in this novel of action and intrigue, set partly in Malta, partly in the treacherous, pirate-infested waters of the Red Sea. While Captain Aubrey worries about repairs to his ship, Stephen Maturin assumes the center stage; for the dockyards and salons of Malta are alive with Napoleon's agents, and the admiralty's intelligence network is compromised. Maturin's cunning is the sole bulwark against sabotage of Aubrey's daring mission. This is the ninth in O'Brian's 20-volume Aubrey/Maturin series.Don't miss the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin series.©1983 Patrick O'Brian (P)2000 Random House AudioBooks, a Division of Random House, Inc. Critic reviews

"... comic, grim, farcical, and tragic. An essential of the truly gripping book for the narrative addict is the creation of a whole, solidly living world for the imagination to inhabit, and O'Brian does this with prodigal specificity and generosity." (A.S. Byatt)

This recording is a huge disappointment because it is abridged. Buy an unabridged version instead. Honestly, who on earth would abridge Patrick O'Brian? Would they abridge Shakespeare, too?

Abridged version!

The story was up to POB's high standard, I'm sure, but as an abridged version it lacked continuity and completeness. I was disappointed that a full, unabridged version was not available through Audible. There appearto be full versions of all the other books in the series. Pigot-Smith's voicings for the main characters seemed too high brow for my taste. I would much prefer either Patrick Tull or Ric Jerrom. Overall, not worth the full price charged.

I thought I had the unabridged edition with Patrick Tull reading. I did not. I would recomend getting the unabridged version. This reader does a poor job with the different accents and voices, he makes all the characters sound shallow and in many cases too young. Part of the shallows ness could be that alot of the detail is left out in the abbridged version. At any rate get the unabridged version of this book. I have not listened to the unabridged version yet, but now I will have to get it and listen to this story again. Very frustrating.
