Publisher's summary

From New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell, the first exciting adventure in the world-renowned Sharpe series, chronicling the rise of Richard Sharpe, a Private in His Majesty’s Army at the siege of Seringapatam.

“The greatest writer of historical adventures today.” —Washington Post

Richard Sharpe. Soldier, hero, rogue—the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles, whose green jacket he proudly wears.

Excellent performance and amazing story!

This is one of my favorite series and this will be my third time listening to it! You won’t be disappointed listening to the literal hundreds of hours this series gives you.

Love the Audiobook version

I read this whole series years ago and now I’m experiencing it again through audiobooks. This was very enjoyable and since I spend a lot of time driving for work I was able to listen whereas I don’t have a lot of time to read paper books. Just as good a story as I remember and the narrator did a great job with the accents and with capturing the energy of certain scenes.

Great book

If your familiar with Bernard Cornwells work, this book will not disappoint. I’ve listened to the Saxon Chronicles 1-13 (the last kingdom), the Warlord Chronicles and the few other of his books. Safe to say I’m a huge fan. I was a little disappointed when I finished the last kingdom, it took me a year and 3 months to get through all of them. I thought I had nothing else that would intrigue me as much as the last set of novels. Well, I was wrong. There’s around 23 volumes of the life of Sgt Richard Sharpe of the 33rd Battalion and I’m looks forward to the journey. Enjoy!!

Excellent book.

Cornwell grips you from the start, and won’t let you go until the very end. He excels at creating likeable, flawed heroes.

Thrilling!!!

Bernard Cornwell is a master story teller and Rupert Farley was born to read this tale!

felt like I was there

The characters seemed so real, i could just reach out and touch them. I truly enjoyed the action and intrigue of the story. I'm ready to read more.

Love Cornwell’s Sharpe Series!

The performance was phenomenal, and I’m excited to continue this series in this new, verbal light

Descriptive and well performed

Really great, I admit I had to listen a number of times to get all the details I wanted, could not stop listening. I quickly sought out book #2.

Loyal Fan

I loved watching the live-action televised series starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, and I also loved reading/listening to this audio book.

Performance amazing, too much imperialism

I’ve always enjoyed Bernard Cornwell but the overtly, persistently, cruelly imperialist storyline just didn’t go down very easily for me. I would have been okay with an ending where every one of the protagonists suffered greatly and decided to run back to Europe and stay there. That said, it was well written as expected and the narrator was one of the best I’ve ever come across on Audible.
