About this listen
Stevenson's quintessential pirate adventure story, brilliantly conceived and executed! Created by actor/narrator Chris Hendrie, the characters immediately spring to life. Young Jim Hawkins tells his own coming-of-age story as he sets sail to find gold with his pirate friends, encountering the magnificent Long John Silver - one legged, quick, cunning, and genial. Through mutiny and deceit, Jim discovers that slippery and charismatic Long John is his ultimate antagonist and that he will have to best him if right is to win the day. Young Jim becomes a hero and the treasure is recovered.

Story
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Well narrated and engaging story
What made the experience of listening to Treasure Island the most enjoyable?
Characterizations and ease of voice changes with various accents and archaic language pronunciations. Excellent story read by a master of the genre.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Treasure Island?
The scene where the main character is pinnted to the mast by a thrown knife while he accidentally shoots one of the villians. But there are so many other great scenes!

Long John Silver, fantastic characterization.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.

Pirates comes alive with Treasure Island!
Any additional comments?
Wow! What a captivating story with a brilliant narrator!! I downloaded Treasure Island onto my Ipod and got so into the story, I listened to 9 chapters straight. The narrator's range of characters (especially Long John Silver) sets an exciting tone and the story really comes alive. You feel as though you are amongst the pirates. I am going to recommend this to all of my friends and their kids...perfect for every pirate lover!
PS I googled the narrator and he is a well known Hollywood actor. It is much more fun listening to him create the characters than the typical audiobook narrators that simply read the story.
