Publisher's summary

Tribalism has made politics so awful I was forced to write a book about it. Well, fine. Fine.

This book explores the evolutionary roots of loving our team and hating the enemy team, and why groupish caveman instincts linger in our minds today. It answers: If tribalism is hardwired into us, what changed in the last twenty years? How did partisanship get so loud, toxic, and obnoxious, and ruin last Thanksgiving? Finally, it says what we can do about it as individuals navigating relationships, and as society as a whole.

"Tribalism is Dumb" will make you less flummoxed by partisanship, political loudmouths, and dogmatic pundits. It will make you taller, slimmer, and more attractive to everyone you could legally hit on. And it will make you better equipped to navigate tribalism in the wild.

Timely, refreshing, and well narrated

I enjoy Heaton’s take on politics, what divides us, and how to have better political discussions. I appreciate his work in writing it, and recommend it wholeheartedly.

funny, insightful, hopeful

a funny and insightful read about the current state of politics, that ends on a hopeful note. I enjoyed listening to it.

I fear or dear author Andrew Heaton may be cursed to write another book like this in the near future.

Just what America needs!

Just finished and I loved every second. Heaton is one of my favorite podcasters, and the book is a distillation. I’m glad I chose the audio book as we get Scottish accents and a description of a diagram that is far better than looking at the thing. Informative and just the right amount of absurd humor, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Buy. Listen. You will enjoy and probably learn. Then go listen to Heatons other books, and the political orphanage, and alienating the audience, and we’re not wrong, and losers pretenders and scoundrels. Heaton if you’re reading this, when to we get your first novel?

Andrew Heaton is a class act

Spectacular book. I laughed, I cried. I am now smarter, taller, handsome(r?) and better in bed. My boss gave me a raise and my wife is 11% more attractive.
While you may not believe me, you’ll just have to read the book to make sure!

Funny and Informative!

What a wonderful read! Andrew does a great job of making complex ideas easy to understand; while doing it with a great sense of humor. I'd highly recommend this book to my friends.

Informative and well thought

While, I don’t agree with all collusions. Mr. Hetton did a very good job at presenting his case and the logic behind it.

Well-researched guidebook for understanding and navigating the current American political cesspool in which some of us reside

Mr. Heaton combines heavy, textbook-appropriate reading material with a sprinkling of wit and satire that makes things digestible for most. I did purchase this as an audiobook but the flow was good and easy enough to follow the logical arguments at first pass.

I think if the ideas in this book make their way to the general population, we will be in a much better place in this country (USA). In fact, outside of some racy bits Mr. Heaton interjects, this material would be great for listeners ages 10 to 110- anyone interested in knowing how and why we (people) act or think or feel the things we do, and how the current state of technology and politics is ushering us all towards a life of permanent vitriol and never ending partisanship. Unlike many books that describe the current state of affairs but leave you hanging, Mr. Heaton provides some concrete ideas that we can work towards, both individually and collectively, that may provide some respite and relief from the current political climate.

Let’s hope our future AI overlords don’t use this as their guide to world domination, but they might…

In the meantime, I recommend you read this book if you have any interest in better understanding why US politics is what it is today and if you want to contribute to making things better.

Great read

informative but also humorous. The author writes more like a podcast or a monolog rather than a traditional book but I don't think that's a bad thing.

Informative and Funny

I have listened to Andrew's podcast for the last 3 years. I've often wondered how he has managed to get so many different guests with different opinions and been able to carry out very amiable conversations even when they disagree. this book has been most informative and not only why and how our country has gotten to where we are politically, but has also given me insight on how to have conversations when they start to go off the rails politically. thank you Andrew for such a captivating novel.

Witty and insightful

This was a delightful listen! Heaton’s narration is great, and his writing style paired with this keeps the book from ever feeling dry and boring.
Even though the book is related to politics, I think this provides a great framework on how to have difficult conversations in everyday life. Would very much suggest this to read or listen to!
