About this listen

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature

This is Jon Fosse’s critically acclaimed, luminous love story about Asle and Alida, two lovers trying to find their place in this world. Homeless and sleepless, they wander around Bergen in the rain, trying to make a life for themselves and the child they expect. Through a rich web of historical, cultural, and theological allusions, Fosse constructs a modern parable of injustice, resistance, crime, and redemption. Consisting of three novellas (Wakefulness, Olav’s Dreams, and Weariness), Trilogy is a haunting, mysterious, and poignant evocation of love, for which Fosse received The Nordic Council’s Prize for Literature in 2015.

Fosse gently leads us through the lives of 2 young people in love in challenging circumstances, in what seems to be the 1800s. We are also provided a glimpse of later years.

Meditative and engaging

Perhaps the best narrator I have listened to and a very touching little book. It will have a special place in my heart somewhere.

Excellent!

I didn't warm to this story. the overall storyline was okay, but the writing style was too repetitive. I didn't get a strong message by the end, and wondered what the point was supposed to be. lots of words for not much take home.

too repetitive
