About this listen

It is the spring of 1800. Captain Alan Lewrie, fresh from victory in the South Atlantic, is back in England and fitting out his new frigate, the HMS Savage. But true to fashion, Lewrie can't stay ashore too long without trouble arising. A Jamaican court has tried him in absentia and sentenced him to hang for the theft of a dozen black slaves. The vengeful slave owner has made his way to London to seek Lewrie's end...with or without the majesty of the law! To complicate matters further, Lewrie must also deal with allegations that he is a faithless rakehell, as his wife has been informed through anonymous letters.

Despite shoreside legal matters, Lewrie takes the Savage on king's business to Southwest France, to plug the threat of enemy warships, privateers, and neutrals smuggling goods in and out of Bordeaux. It could be dull and plodding dreariness, but a bored Captain Alan Lewrie, safe in his post (for the moment), can be a dangerous fellow to his country's foes...if only to relieve the tedium!

no comment other than I hope he can write faster I can listen, forever. Thank you Alan and Mr John Lee, of course.

Great book for my most favorite Nautical series

What did you love best about Troubled Waters?

Extremely well written and entertaining throughout. I listened to the entire book in just 2 days and just couldn't stop! I really liked how Mr. Lambdin gave great insight into 18th/19th century justice and at the same time kept it light and fun. The action is great.

What other book might you compare Troubled Waters to and why?

In some ways it reminds me of the early Ramage series by Dudley Pope. I loved the Ramage series but actually think that Mr. Lambdin's books are better written and more realistic.

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

Listening to John Lee is like being able to watch a movie in your mind. His annunciation is simply wonderful and is performance is flawless and extremely consistent! Probably one of the best narrators out there.

If you could take any character from Troubled Waters out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Zachariah Twigg, of course. He is just about the most mysterious and one of the most interesting characters of the whole series. I would like to know details of his life we would be willing to tell.

Any additional comments?

The series is fantastic and I just wish Lewrie had little more good luck outside of his shipboard activities. For all he has done and accomplished he should be Lord Alan Lewrie at this point. It would also be nice to see him get more high ranking admirals behind him. It's too bad we have to wait a few books for him to be knighted and given his baronetcy.

Excellent description of unfolding strategy

I love naval stories but often find it difficult to follow battles. Dewey Lambdin does a great job of describing the relative positions of combatants and relaying the action with clarity, excellent pacing and thrilling narrative. Strategy is central to the plot, and he does a good job of keeping the reader on board as the story unfolds.

What will it take to get Lee to read the rest?

This, like the rest of the series, was phenomenal. Great reads but so much better read to the listeners by John Lee. Please publish the rest as audiobooks!! Thank you.

great story and performance!

Ken Lee delivers another great performance and is a perfect match for Lambdin's work! now if the publisher will get off their butt and release the rest of his books in audio format!

Too much time in the wake

If I had not read any previous books in the series I would have appreciated the extensive history. As I have read them all, it was just wasted time in the wake of the storyline.
