About this listen
Earth 2303
After the scars and devastation of two world wars, humans have, as a species, begun to cooperate towards a common goal, the expansion into space and the successful colonization of Mars and our Moon. This has led to the exploration and eventual building of domed outposts on some of the moons of the outer gas giants.
Because of a breakthrough in space travel, vehicles can move at nearly 20 percent of the speed of light, allowing humans to reach the outermost parts of the solar system and beyond in practical time.
When an experiment to study dark matter beyond the Oort Cloud yields an unexpected result, the government scrambles to discover why their probe appears to have traveled much farther than planned, and why their probe has what appears to be damage caused by a weapon. They then analyze the probe’s data and find that they have picked up a signal that seems to have originated from an intelligent source. A new manned mission is initiated to discover the origin of the signal, but the mission lands itself near an exoplanet, and in the middle of a fevered conflict.

This novella contains 31,000 words. The first manned mission to Alpha Centauri is in trouble. Pathfinder carries experts from six nations to survey the Earth-like moon, named New Haven, discovered by a robot probe, in advance of the arrival of other colony ships built inside hollowed-out asteroids. New Haven is mankind’s only hope of avoiding extinction from the inevitable deluge of comets disrupted from their orbits by a rogue, brown dwarf star. With only weeks left before arrival at New Haven, the collegial atmosphere among the passengers is shattered by a shocking death and an apparent ...

Story
Earth has fallen under the influence of the Fermion Party, whose members believe humanity’s future lies in the metaverse, a simulated environment to which people can upload their consciousness to become immortal. As a simulant, one cannot get sick, grow old, or die. Human beings have no business risking their lives in the betaverse, where injury and illness can kill them. And those who wish to explore beyond the solar system blaspheme what the Fermions believe is the natural order.

Story
Daniel Rice is a government science investigator whose specialty is solving seemingly intractable problems through scientific inquiry. But Daniel's intellectual strength is sorely tested by the bizarre realities he finds in the quantum world. Extra dimensions of space trap the unwary, probability replaces cause and effect, and time isn't what anyone imagined. The other side of the mirror is a place full of dangers, but it's also somewhere a dedicated scientist can uncover secrets that connect humans with something greater.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.
