About this listen

The USS Seawolf was one of the greatest submarine raiders of all time. Having narrowly avoided the attack on Pearl Harbor the Seawolf set out for the seas of the Pacific to wreak havoc on Japanese shipping.

Joseph Melvin Eckberg was on the Seawolf from her maiden voyage and remained with her until January 1943. As chief radioman he was instrumental in assisting Captain Frederick Warder to find and destroy enemy targets.

From the claustrophobia of being trapped under water and the overwhelming fear of depth charges to the joys of aiding the war-effort and the camaraderie on the ship, Eckberg's account, told to the authors Gerold Frank and James Horan, gives remarkable insight into submarine warfare of the Second World War.

Good WW-II Submariner Story

I have read many World War II submarine/submariner books. Most are much more technical than this one. They are great if you want to know the intricacies of the war below. This book, however, focuses more on the human aspects of this story. If you don't care about all of the details of operating a WW-II submarine, and instead want a good human interest story, this is it.

This book talks about one of the more successful submarine Commanding Officers as told through the eyes of his Chief Petty Officer. It stayed interesting throughout the entire book.

Informative

As a retired tin can sailor it is interesting to hear a sun sailor’s perspective on issues at sea. Great listen

Excellent book

I have been reading about World War II for the last 60 years. This is one of the better books. I have not read as much about submarines as some of the other aspects of World War II. Seawolf was one of the first if not the first active submarine in WWII. Details of shipboard life were quite detailed and contained descriptions I had never heard before. I recommend this book highly.

Ex Sub sailor

As an old diesel boat sailor from the 60s and having stood sonar (sound), radar and countermeasures watches, I could almost feel part of the crew, with much of the equipment sounding familiar. Good read.

Another Excellent WWII Sub Tale

Books that follow World War Two subs are becoming scarce. This audiobook was released in 2018 (paper edition in 2000), so to me this is a new one. I found the story as enjoyable as the best of the older WWII sub books. It is one of those titles for which I found myself saying, "Oh Boy!," whenever I returned to it. It ended all too soon. Loved it!
Narration was excellent; transparent.

A VERY GOOD TALE OF THE LIFE ON A SUB

A well-done story of the life on a sub during WW2. like many other tales it is the story of 1 life, 1 great from that long-lost generation of heroes.
