About this listen

Saturn was the Roman god, who ate his children to stop them from usurping his power. Men have been psychologically and spiritually wounded by this legacy. Hollis offers a rich perspective on the secrets men carry in their hearts.

Overall, a well rounded and much called for take on the woundedness of men, as well as society as a whole.

Powerful and necessary

This work illuminates the condition of the human psyches need for Individuation. It has a strong bases for males, but these same psychological conditions can be seen in women who didn't have a father to teach them to be Athena (Arguably the most suited goddes to be the mother of my children, and partner in existence).

Unfortunately this book is "Pushing Rope" in regards to instruction on self therapy... But it still holds significant social value, and is dangerously relevent to the worlds teetering neurotic psyche!

learn the Jungian practices for analysis, and get a good therapist of you can! A world that feels a little more like home or "eden" awaits us.

Now I don't wonder why Communism is so popular these days...

Narrators voice a bit see saw to listen to but enjoyed the.overall content and specific challenges men have

Good guidance for men

I can barely focus on the content because the narrator is reading as if he is performing a Shakespearean play - very unpleasant as he seems to try and be particularly artistic, when all that i wish is a calm and balanced cadence and clear reading

Great topic horrible narrator

Easily one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The call for men to truly heal and move beyond our own suppression is possible. And this book helps me on that journey.

One of the best books I’ve read

The reader/performer is a bit weak (occasionally mispronounces words and massacres names of writers mentioned in the book and doesn’t seem to comprehend everything he is reading), but the book, as written, is very good. This is one of the author’s earlier works.

I admire the author’s great insight gathered through a career as a psychoanalyst and academic. I listened to an interview of the author on the Huberman podcast and found the author to be very insightful. This book is proof of that. I look forward to listening to a more recent title by the author: Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life, which I expect will deal with similar issues in a more current framework.

Jungian analysis of the spiritual sickness plaguing modern man.

I love this type of books, that make you ask and formulate your own questions. This is not a "5 steps to..." book, but an invitation to a more meaningfull life.
It would have been so much better if Dr. Hollis read it though, as his voice ads depth.

A must listen for men approaching midlife

The author has such great insight into the psyche of men, and people in general, as this guidance should be taken by both. I have shared the information and hope to help inspire the awakening and becoming one’s self.

Much Needed for all

The content is phenomenal. Accurate and understandable insight about what forms modern men into what they are.

The narrator used a nightly news anchor voice and inflection that did not pair well with the content.

Best book for understanding men and the human condition

It was good. Reflective and difficult at times. I didn’t agree with all of the deductions but a great read nonetheless. Thank you.

Freudianism with an emphasis on tribal/ritual experience
