About this listen

Robert A. Johnson, best-selling author of He, She, We and other psychology classics, shares a lifetime of insights and experiences in this easy-to-listen-to explanation of psychological projection - seeing traits in others that are, in fact, our own. He masterfully reveals how each of us gives up our inner gold to those whom we idealize or are attracted to. Each one of us must learn the arduous task of “taking back” this gold as we move through life’s journey.

Drawing on early Christianity, medieval alchemy, depth psychology, and the myths of the Flying Dutchman and the Once and Future King, he also explores the subjects of loneliness, fundamentalist religion, and the spiritual dimensions of psychology.

One of the most influential and visionary analysts of his generation, Johnson follows the tradition of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell among those whose ideas have shaped our deepest metaphors of self and psyche. His books are known worldwide for presenting Jung’s complex theories with the simplicity and grace.

"With twinkling eyes and the smile of a wise old man, Robert Johnson brings us the wisdom of a life fully lived. The healing power of Robert's writing is palpable." (Marion Woodman)

"Robert Johnson’s work always has that naked intensity that tells you you’re in the psychic house of an honest man." (Robert Bly)

Great book for mentors or therapists

Really good book... especially if you are a mentor or aspire to be. To me the attitude towards projection feels right and I think it is an excellent metaphor... it resonates! I read this book a few times with some fellow therapists and I have also used it as sort of a devotional to remind me of the importance of handling matters of the Soul like gold.

Inner Gold ~ A Return To My Beloved Self

This book delivered much, touching my psyche in ways I had not expected! It also complemented my years in study of evolutionary astrology on a very personal note.

As the author shares his clinical and personal experience, and flowed to describe his flavor as an introvert, it peeked my interest to continue.

Mythology stories, some are new to me and the narrator's voice is pleasantly soothing.

I have always been quite fond of Indian culture and had learned of my past life there, an oath of sacred marriage shared with my (now-ex) husband of 16 yrs. Getting my gold back in this life from him was a difficult challenge.

This all made more sense when the author shared that the Indian people often looked to a particular godlike person who could temporarily hold their gold, too heavy to bear and when the time came, it was always given back. As it must! ~> J Krishna Maurti

I have been in a relationship for 24 years and what we share is true human love. Such a blessing!

As for others, I reclaim the gold I gave away. A ceremony with me and my beloved soul. This is each person's birth right!

Thank you Robert Johnson ✨🙏

Holds Value

I look forward to the day that we start mass studies in Jungian concepts, and take things much deeper. When we start combining the works of Russell Targ, Micheal Persinger, Dr Daniel Amen.... and more.

Johnson is brilliant!

🙋‍♂️Ever wonder how to re-project the religious stories into actual livable psychological fact? 💁🏼‍♂️
Few things are more important than understanding projection.

A Powerful Teaching

I wish I had learned this when I was 18, before I spent the next 20 years chasing gurus, many of which we’re not worthy of carrying my gold. Robert however is worthy of hold my gold, but this wisdom has helped me mature to the point that I don’t need him to.

“Literalism is the death of insight “

This book contains so much more wisdom than insights about projection and metaphorical gold. Johnson is a brilliant scholar of myth and culture.
