About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Delia Balmer entered into a relationship with the attentive John Sweeney, she had no idea he was a serial killer.

At first he was caring but over the course of their relationship he became violent and controlling. On more than one occasion he held Delia hostage and tortured her. Chillingly, he also confessed to the murder of his previous girlfriend. After one serious assault, Sweeney was released on bail, and left her in the utmost fear knowing that he would return to finish her off. After a final frenzied attack leaving Delia on the brink of death, Sweeney went on the run. Astonishingly, it would take the police six years to capture and convict Sweeney of multiple murders.

This is her compelling memoir.

One of best books I have ever read. Very tough listen. Irritating but tender. Thoughtful and deep.

Wow! Painful and Beautiful

Listened to this after seeing the stunning miniseries, which was shocking, infuriating and heartbreaking. I can only hope that the treatment of domestic assault victims has improved on both sides of the Atlantic since these events occurred. Her rage, fury and bitterness were well justified. I can only hope that Delia finds some semblance of peace by telling her story.

What a story

What the author went through was horrific, but I kept waiting for her to make the decision to change her life rather than waste it being angry. Didn’t happen. It go tiring listening to her blaming everyone.

Enough already

Very detailed and entertaining. Disbelief of the incompetence of the police and justice system. It’s sad that the victim had to keep being victimized over and over while the offender gets to live “free”

So real. So compelling. Delia slowly weaves her living tragedy of her life with a serial killer. Yet there was something about her over the three years she lived with him that hated him and drew her to him simultaneously. A fascinating story. In the end my heart and hope for her wellbeing is with her!
