About this listen

Oprah.com raved that Asa Larsson's Rebecka Martinsson is "a crime fighter who has all the needed gut insticts," and listed the series as "Mysteries Every Thinking Woman Should Read".

In Until Thy Wrath Be Past, the body of a young woman surfaces in the River Torne, in the far north of Sweden. Meanwhile, Rebecka Martinsson is working as a prosecutor in nearby Kiruna. Her sleep has been disturbed by haunting visions of a shadowy, accusing figure. Could the body be connected to the ghostly young woman in her dreams?

Joining forces once again with Police Inspector Anna-Maria Mella, Rebecka is drawn into a murder and missing-person investigation that becomes entangled with old rumors of a German supply plane that mysteriously disappeared in 1943. Shame and secrecy shroud the locals' memories of the war, with Sweden's early collaboration with the Nazis still a raw wound. And on the windswept shore of a frozen lake lurks a faceless killer determined to keep the past buried forever beneath half a century's silent ice and snow.

With its psychologically complex twists and turns, this harrowing thriller captivates from the very first minutes.

Swedish murder mystery set in tiny village

A bit of English cosy mixed into well described Swedish countryside. This mystery has lots of strings to follow and think about. While you have a pretty good idea who did it midway, or a little later, the why is very much a question. Rebecca Martinssen is a likeable character as are Velma, Annie, the folks of the police department, and even the village. The author does a great job of making you see wintery Sweden as though you are there as she slowly weaves the past into the present with flashbacks. This definitely is not a super fast thriller but it is a window on a disappearing and changing way of life. The sense of nature pervades the novel. I really enjoyed the read and am ready l q0 pqq11to start the next.

Good “read”

It’s interesting to follow a story like this, where the whodunnit becomes obvious early on, but the pulling it altogether provides the suspense. I guess that psychological thriller describes it, but not quite for me and I’m not sure why. PS I was disappointed that the mother did not face justice.

I loved this

The psychological (& sociological) complexity and empathy she shows to her characters and her extraordinary sensitivity to nature make me love Larrson's work. The narrator is more than competent, but her take on the characters conflicted with my own and thus caused me to try to more or less ignore her. This is just a personal taste and others may obviously react otherwise to her reading.

wonderful read and listen

how to explain the beauty of a thriller where the killers are known early, but their lives pealed back layer upin layer. the writing is so beautifully evokative of place, smells, sounds, seasons and the internal voices of the complex, unexpected characters. i will listen again.

Couldn’t stop listening

This author is so descriptive of the characters and environments that I get vivid pictures in my head. I love the interactions between characters and how flawed they are. Overall I can’t wait to read the next book.
