Publisher's summary

In the first book of Peter May's critically acclaimed Enzo Files, forensics expert Enzo MacLeod wagers that he can solve six perplexing cold cases - and unexpectedly places himself directly in harm's way.

"Action-packed." (Entertainment Weekly)
"Brisk and thrilling." (The Baltimore Sun)
"Thoroughly engaging." (Library Journal)

Half-Scottish, half-Italian Enzo MacLeod used to be one of the top forensics experts in Scotland, and now he lives in Toulouse, working as a university professor. Divorced in Scotland and widowed in France, he has an estranged Scottish daughter and a French daughter he has raised by himself.

As if his life isn't complicated enough, he soon finds himself unexpectedly on the hunt for solutions to some vexing cold cases thanks to an ill-advised wager about the power of forensic science.

Meanwhile, in Paris, a man desperately seeking sanctuary flees into a church. The next day, his sudden disappearance will make him famous throughout France.

Deep in the catacombs below the City of Light, MacLeod unearths disturbing clues deliberately left behind by a killer. But as the retired forensics expert draws closer to the truth, he discovers he may just wind up the next victim for his troubles.

Great story

Excellent intro to this series. Love the narrator. Peter May never disappoints. Can’t wait to read book 2.

Skip this one

I moved on to the Enzo McLeod series straight from the outstanding Lewis series. What a big disappointment this one turned out to be. Way too much Dan Brown influence and not enough Peter May. I had to go back several chapters more than once because it was so dull that I tuned out while listening. Only to find the same problem the second time through.
I am going to give the next Enzo book a try in hopes that this one was an anomaly.

I am never getting that 11 hours back

First off, I loved the narrator!!!!! His accents are beautiful. His voice was the only thing going for it.

I stuck with it, but I hardly realized the end had come and gone.

Read the other negative reviews. I don't need to say the same exact things over and over. They are all true.

This is my first Peter May book, and even if others have said this wasn't like him, I will still stay away. So much better out there to read. Like a real mystery/thriller.

Peter May!!!

In the previous trilogy May wrote an island and a country as the character that was most beloved. In this New trilogy we are introduced to May's poetic version of a straightforward murder mystery! His writing style combined with a classic formula is magic!

predictable

I prefer unpredictable plots. This story plot was too predictable for me.I knew the ending way before it came.

Many twists and turns. A great listen

The story is great, many twists and turns. It is a bit of a challenge understand all of the French but when listening to it the story makes sense. Definitely an enjoyable read.

not Peter May's best

I just didn't connect with the main character, Enzo, nor did I care for the "scavenger hunt" method of solving this cold case. I DID enjoy the fabulous setting, Paris (where my heart lives), but can't believe that after living there for 20 years, Enzo didn't know about the catacombs. Really? Nearly ruined the book for me. I won't pursue this series.

Captivating listen

This was a wonderful book. I couldn’t stop listening- I had to look for things to do so I could keep going. The descriptions of the places Enzo went were well done and interesting. I ended up researching the sites and thinking how nice it would be to see them. I bought the next before I finish this. I highly recommend it!
