Story
To the Creshe Empire, I’m just a number. I’ve spent the past five years in isolation and under study. With my home razed by a Syldrari attack, my mind damaged, and nothing but white walls and a viewing window around me, I dedicated myself to two things: training my body, and reading any book they allowed me to have. The Empire wants me to serve, to use the inhuman power the Incident stirred within me. Technically, they asked, but it wasn’t much of a choice. It never is. Serve, or...I refused to be a mindless slave. My life was taken from me once. Never again.

To be born a non-gratis means a life of little freedoms and the constant possibility of being assigned to work on a colony. Lacking citizenship, every aspect of their life is controlled from where they live down to marriage and childbearing regulations. The only possible escape from life as a non-gratis is to qualify for one of the limited slots available for entrance into the military.

Story
It is not impossible to rewrite history. In fact, when one computer runs the world, changing history happens faster. Those who were heroes have been labeled villains. The alien Melagorns and Dreth, once friends, are now competitors at best. The Regime works to instill loyalty to humanity. Loyalty to brotherhood. Loyalty to the state. Loyalty to the words preached every night. John Dunn fled into a radioactive wasteland, seeking death rather than work in the Regime. What he learns changes humanity forever.

Unique Characters and Situations
In book 2 we see the return of Scythia and the team to the Nationalist Enforcement Bureau Station for review of the actions performed in their first mission. In response to their review, the team and Scythia decide to lay low but as they say, even the best-laid plans often go awry …
The author, Jesse Harvey maintains plot consistency and character development from book one to book two while also evolving the characters in a rich and vivid manner.
