About this listen
Combining the social commentary of The Handmaid’s Tale with the white-knuckled thrills of Red Rising, this epic space opera filled with “lush prose” (Publishers Weekly) follows a comfort woman as she claims her agency, a soldier questioning his allegiances, and a non-binary hero out to save the solar system.
First Sister has no name and no voice. As a priestess of the Sisterhood, she travels the stars alongside the soldiers of Earth and Mars - the same ones who own the rights to her body and soul. When her former captain abandons her, First Sister’s hopes for freedom are dashed when she is forced to stay on her ship with no friends, no power, and a new captain - Saito Ren - whom she knows nothing about. She is commanded to spy on Captain Ren by the Sisterhood, but soon discovers that working for the war effort is much harder when you’re falling in love.
Lito val Lucius climbed his way out of the slums to become an elite soldier of Venus but was defeated in combat by none other than Saito Ren, resulting in the disappearance of his partner, Hiro. When Lito learns that Hiro is both alive and a traitor to the cause, he now has a shot at redemption: track down and kill his former partner. But when he discovers recordings that Hiro secretly made, Lito’s own allegiances are put to the test. Ultimately, he must decide between following orders and following his heart.
With “a layered, action-filled plot and diverse characters” (Library Journal), The First Sister explores the power of technology, colonization, race, and gender and is perfect for fans of James S.A. Corey, Chuck Wendig, and Jay Posey.

Story
In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. Story
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Story
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands.

I never believed in the whole “light at the end of the tunnel” folly where people, after having a near-death experience, would startle awake in a cold sweat exclaiming, “I saw the light!” But there I was, in this so-called “tunnel” facing a glaring light, when the last thing I remembered was sleeping in my room - the royal bed-chamber, as others called it. Had I died? If so, how? King Grey once benefited from unrivaled strength, wealth, and prestige in a world governed by martial ability but now finds himself reborn in a society dominated by magic.

Story
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Trained from the age of 14, Ryn can run faster, jump farther, and fight better than a Navy SEAL - which is good when you’re not sure if a laser-wielding Neanderthal or an axe-wielding Viking is trying to make it through the Rift and into your world. But the teenager’s military conditioning and education have not prepared her for the boy who crosses through.

Wonderful characters, small story
Bottom line: if you like character studies in an effortlessly articulated setting with a focused, maybe even minimalistic story, you'll really dig this. Almost nothing happens in the plot for the first 50% of the book, and that's just great. You seep in the characters and universe for a while, and then a very brief series of events happens towards the end. The titular character affects basically nothing in the plot, but is a perfect vehicle for the author to ruminate on morality and the politics of the war. Overall a fun, smart, and character-focused experience!

dislikable characters
Pros: powerful start, 1 likable MC, unexpected twists, some strong emotions
Cons: 1 likable character, 1 easily manipulated white knight, and I kinda hoped all the other 'heroes' died a violent death. And the story is written as if I they are entitled to a level or empathy that excuse that they are really horrible people

Great story!
It has been a long time since I have enjoyed something from the sci-fi genre. I loved the characters and the world building. My only complaint, as someone who is Japanese, is that there is some stereotyping that grated at me a bit. However other aspects of the characters that were not stereotypical outshined the stereotypical bits. Plus I have read books with much worse stereotyping.
The First Sister is definitely woth the read or listen and I can't wait for the second book.

Unexpectedly Wonderful
I stumbled across The First Sister at a time when I was somewhat over-saturated in the genre. I expected something fairly typical. Instead, I found that It was a hidden gem. The world that the story is set in is fresh and intriguing. It’s not too often that plot twists surprise me, but First Sister managed it. The narrators did a great job bringing the characters to life. I liked it so much that I ended up buying a copy of the book to read, as well. I’m eagerly anticipating the next instalment.

So boring
Good narration but awful narrative. Don’t bother with this one. It’s a total waste of time.

Adult Scythe
it was amazing and reminded me fondly of Scythe and the Toll. I can't wait for more. Amazing readers per character and great development of characters and world. A plot twist I never saw coming. 10/10

SO GOOD!
Complex, layered, surprising, and well-performed. I'll definitely look for the next book in the series. I loved it!
