About this listen

To most people, the word economics sounds like homework. In Visible Hand, Wall Street Journal op-ed editor Matthew Hennessey brings basic economic principles vividly to life in plain English, without resorting to numbers, graphs, or jargon. This isn’t Fed policy or the stock market. This is the essential stuff: supply and demand, incentives and tradeoffs, scarcity and innovation, work and leisure. A teenager should be able to discuss these things intelligently. Sadly, too few of us can explain them even in adulthood. Visible Hand equips listeners with the essential vocabulary necessary to understand and explain how we make the choices we do. In Hennessey’s hands, economics is far from the dismal science. It’s the sparkling art of decision-making. No homework necessary.

We need to understand economics. We need, as a country and world to understand capitalism. This book, in easy to understand language, explains why capitalism and free markets are what creates economic growth—not socialism and managed economies.

Great, accessible, book explaining economics

As someone who already had a decent understanding of economics, this was still a wonderful book. For the newbie, this is a great way to understand basic concepts. For an economist, it’s another perspective that can help you better distill concepts to others.

Wonderfully simple and fun read

I found the narrators accent and tone more suitable for a Harry Potter book. For a GenX book from an American author the narration didn’t match and I found it distracting. But past that I enjoyed the relatable description of economics.

Great content but why go with a British accent?

I was an economics major in undergrad and this book was the refresher I needed on the most basic elements of the market. Written for novice or expert alike, Matthew’s work is pithy and enjoyable.

Clearly one of the best economic treatises of the year, an immediate classic as entertaining as it is accurate. Fabulous use of clever verbiage and storytelling, this book scores five stars!wonderfully narrated as if the author himself is speaking. The timing of a comedic genius. Excellent explanation of Free Market Economics among other economic info. Literally blown away with how the book so entertainingly elucidates and simplifies a complex topic so successfully.

Extremely Entertaining and Illuminating

I was excited to hear that Matthew Hennessey, author of Zero Hour For Gen X, had written another book. This explanation of economics for everyone does not disappoint. Because of his approach, combining amusing anecdotes with socio-historical context, I feel like I finally understand what they’re talking about on MSNBC.

Loved it and learned a lot
