About this listen
Vivas en su jardín is the memoir of the only survivor of the Mirabal sisters, killed by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, an event made famous by Julia Álvarez in her book In the Time of the Butterflies. Four sisters (known as the Butterflies) founded a movement defying Trujillo’s dictatorship, and three died for their beliefs. Dedé Mirabal gives readers unparalleled insight into the lives of three modern heroines.

In 1992, the deadliest year in Chicago’s history, seven-year-old Dantrell Davis was shot and killed in front of his elementary school inside the public housing complex Cabrini-Green. What happened to Dantrell led to a truce among Chicago’s gangs, but it also ignited a national panic about poverty and violence in America’s cities. Dantrell’s name would soon be used to demolish all of Chicago’s high-rise public housing, displacing tens of thousands of low-income families.

Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Happy to have found this book
I haven't finished this yet but it will take me a while (I'm listening in Spanish to learn the language better) and I wanted to write the review quickly. So far I'm really intrigued by this book. Anyone who has read "En el tiempo de las mariposas" should love this story as well-sad as it is-and it's amazing that there is actually an introduction by Dedé Miraba herself. I've listened to it over and over again and it's priceless. With as few great selections as there are in Spanish to listen to, I'm thrilled to have found this. Me encanta. Es precioso.

May their memories live for ever!
What a powerful narrative of the brave Mirabal sisters, what they and so many others sacrificed for the freedom of the Dominican Republic and the end of the dictatorship of Joaquín Balaguer and the disgrace of Rafael Trujillo. As I like to say “You may quiet the body by death but you will never silence the spirit or truth”
Thank you Dede for telling their story and having the strength with your mother to continue to fight the fight and raise tour sister’s children, how I would have loved to spend hours in their garden with you!
