Story
The Ottoman Empire has long been depicted as the Islamic Asian antithesis of the Christian European West. But the reality was starkly different: the Ottomans’ multiethnic, multilingual, and multireligious domain reached deep into Europe’s heart. Indeed, the Ottoman rulers saw themselves as the new Romans. Recounting the Ottomans’ remarkable rise from a frontier principality to a world empire, historian Marc David Baer traces their debts to their Turkish, Mongolian, Islamic, and Byzantine heritage.

This kaleidoscopic book covers almost 3,000 years of Arab history and shines a light on the footloose Arab peoples and tribes who conquered lands and disseminated their language and culture over vast distances. Tracing this process to the origins of the Arabic language, rather than the advent of Islam, Tim Mackintosh-Smith begins his narrative more than a thousand years before Muhammad and focuses on how Arabic, both spoken and written, has functioned as a vital source of shared cultural identity over the millennia.

Short Surface-level History Wales 🏴
N.B. I received a free copy of this book via freeaudiobookcodes.com. This was an interesting history of Wales. It was a bit too much of surface-level for my tastes, but kept it short, so I think it's fine for the length. I would have preferred to have a lot more length and the ability to go deeper than the surface level. One section seemed a bit weird in audio form, but that happens on occasion with audiobooks. I think the narrator did a good job of handling the awkwardness of that section.

Very informative.
I appreciate how this book seamlessly weaves together archaeological discoveries, historical narratives, and cultural insights to paint a vivid and engaging portrait of Wales' rich and diverse heritage. It's not just a recounting of events but a celebration of the people, traditions, and defining moments that have shaped this remarkable nation. I also want to appreciate the narrator whose captivating delivery skilfully connects me to the rich tapestry of Wales' history, adding depth and resonance to the audiobook experience.

Beautiful History Brought to Life!!
History Brought Alive certainly lives up to its name by offering an incredibly immersive exploration of Wales’ rich past. As I delved into the narrative, I found myself traversing through lush, rolling green hills and witnessing ancient battles, which made me feel as if I were standing right beside the Celts themselves. This timeless piece seamlessly connects the dots of Welsh history, infusing it with the vibrancy and energy it truly deserves.

An absolute wealth of knowledge, learn many new things
It’s amazing how much history was covered in this book in less than three hours. It didn’t feel rushed, yet I learned so many new things that I had not known before. I now want to go dig deeper into some of the new things that I learned as a result of listening to this book. Also, the narrator did an excellent job. Definitely worth listening to.

A Very Short History of Wales
First up, this is a very short book, with each chapter running about 10 mins each (not nearly enough time to get a solid feel of the topic). While I did learn a few things of interest, the majority covers the intersection of English history that I am fairly familiar with already, so it was struggle to get though much of it; fortunately the narrator was good enough to continue, but the constant references to wikipedia significantly undermined any credibility the work might have had (so I am rounding down instead of up). It’s almost like the author just mailed this in without any serious research. The book is available via kindle unlimited, so if you have that subscription, it might be worth a read as an introduction (or have Alexa read if for you); but if you already have any exposure to Welsh history, this won’t add much.
The chapters and sections in this work are:
Introduction (5:28)
Chapter 1: Ancient Beginnings (5:43)
Chapter 2: The Arrival of the Celts (12:33)
Chapter 3: The Roman Invasion (17:52)
Chapter 4: The Arrival of the Normans (11:44)
Chapter 5: Medieval Wales (20:17)
Chapter 6: Wales Under the Tudors (9:23)
Chapter 7: Wales in the 17th Century (12:12)
Chapter 8: 18th Century Wales and the House of Hanover (5:14)
Chapter 9: Victorian Times in Wales (8:28)
Chapter 10: Wales in the Early 20th Century (8:28)
Chapter 11: The Mid-20th Century and War on the Horizon (18:28)
Chapter 12: Modern Wales and Devolution (20:21)
Chapter 13: Wales in the Early 21st Century (6:19)
Conclusion (3:57)
