About this listen

Bored and fed up with life, staring down a 50th birthday, Mike Tyler was looking for a change. Life had become routinized and unexciting. Maybe it was a mid-life crisis, or maybe just a yearning for one last big adventure. Mike decides to try hiking from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail, just to see what happens.

Mike convinces his wife, Margo, to join him. Together, they embark on a five-month hike full of anticipation. They hike through some of the most stunning and remote places in the country on a trail full of unique, offbeat characters. But the trail had even more to offer than either of them had anticipated.

It started out great but then over time, I felt like I was listening to a children’s book. Not sure if that’s because the narration was bad or if it was the writing style…maybe both. If you want a quick read and enjoy hiking stories, this will do.

It was just ok

Very chill, undramatic, just a telling of a long hike. But it was a peaceful palate cleanser in between the dramatics of other books. I love to day-hike and have been to most of the places along the PCT, just never as a distance hiker. It’s always been a curiosity of mine and this helped a lot with that and really putting a timeline on it. It was informational, but with a story and a heart and so I really enjoyed it! If you are looking for dramatic events and retelling if once-in-a-lifetime adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this isn’t it. But it is what it is and it’s good at that! It also let me know about the John Muir Trail, which I think could be something more of my level. Make no mistake, I thoroughly enjoyed this listen!

I’m not sure if it was the tone of the writing or the reader’s voice, but so many times I felt like I was listening to immature and whining conversations. Often the author made rash descriptions or judgments ... thankfully he included the fact that he DID later evolve his thinking, but it felt so awkward in between. I can’t quite put my finger in it.

The story was certainly valuable enough to hear to the end, but it was frustrating to listen to. Now I’m wondering if this would have been better to read rather than listen. (?)

Somewhat disappointed

It was an OK read, but the very simplified style of the author felt like I was reading a children’s book.

Non-stressful

gives you a good sense of the experience on the PCT, but a little cheesy at times

Good, but cheesy

I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks about hiking and adventure. This book has nothing exciting whatsoever. In fact, the couple gets along so well that I question the authenticity of this memoir.

Unadventurous

What a great story and an amazing journey they had together. I hope to do the PCT or the AT when I retire.

Great story

Ok story. It read more like a diary. The narrator made the characters sound like half wits.

Here we have another journey on th PCT. it is a true account of the author and his wife as they hike. It is a little luke warm, nothing overly dramatic. it's something to listen too. it does do the trick of motivating me to go and do the PCT.

Not horrible

Easy ready. No strong language. lighthearted approach and descriptions of the PCT. Some interesting variations from other ways that hikers prep. These individuals did not pre-ship resupply boxes, and used ultra light backpacks. Refreshing read.

Suitable for all Ages. interesting approach to PCT
