Publisher's summary

For Eric Travis, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail was not about hiking. It was about expanding his mental development by listening to audiobooks. Over the 156-day and 2,500-plus-mile journey, Travis completed 71 audiobooks on a wide range of genres such as religion, history, personal development, and literary classics - all of which served to expand his knowledge, cultural awareness, and business acumen.

Originally released exclusively as an audiobook, Wander Purposefully: A Reflection on How to Love Learning introduces the listener to absorbent learning, a practical lifestyle that encourages and inspires learning for the sake of learning. Travis welcomes you - the learner - to envision and apply his techniques within your existing daily routines. Many of his techniques hide in plain sight and require minimal effort. The three types of absorbent learning - auditory, visual, and experiential - define a new learning lifestyle that benefits not only the learners and their surrounding communities, but ultimately the world at large.

Absorbent learning coaches anyone, especially those with the busiest of schedules, how to maximize new learning potential and bring more focused purpose into their daily lives. This book is highly recommended to anyone seeking to live with a greater sense of intention and connection to the world around them.

Exceptional read!

As someone who typically finds self betterment books far too fluffy, Wander Purposefully was a refreshing reset. The author gives a candid look into the hard work, time, and effort required to accomplish great feats while outlining actionable tasks to lead listeners to their goals. Far too often we are told tales of great success without properly examining the journey required to get there. Mr. Travis walks the listener through an insightful and exciting tale of his journey on the Pacific Crest Trail and brings the listener a well rounded perspective on continuous learning. This book can truly benefit readers of any age, absolutely recommend!

A Self-Help and Philosophical Tour de Force

Eric's message is practical, effective, and remarkably profound. Using his hike of the Pacific Crest Trail as the backbone for both his learning and the structure of the book, he takes readers through the three kinds of absorbent learning: auditory, visual, and experiential. In a well measured and encouraging tone, he describes his intellectual journey and lays out a blueprint for any reader hoping to: -Speak knowledgeably on any number of topics -Develop relationships quickly with strangers -Grow acquaintanceships into strong friendships -Have an appreciation for cultures and perspectives outside of their own -Grow in empathy and gratitude ...among a multitude of other gems of wisdom. Eric weaves in childhood anecdotes, excellently selected quotes from the 70+ books he read on his journey from Mexico to Canada, and has a knack for identifying the turning points in the development of his learning theories. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it has lead me to reevaluate a number of things about how I use my time, and the things that I wish to accomplish. I am grateful for having read it, and highly recommend it to anyone seeking to live with a greater sense of intention, and connection to the world around them. GU Rugby for life!

Good listen, GREAT message

You'll want to turn the reading speed up. Very slow narration. Other than that, good listen, GREAT message.

You'll Never Think About Learning the Same Way

Eric Travis' book is refreshing and avant-garde. As someone in the traditional education space (elementary principal), this is a wake-up call. Travis' "Absorbent Learning lifestyle" captures the imagination and rekindles the love for learning. This book shows how accumulating knowledge is more than transactional. It's relational. Travis outlines how to train your mind to be more attuned to learning opportunities, whether it's on your commute, in your shower, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, or wherever. But most importantly he beautifully explains how to translate this learning to into building relationships, expanding your worldview, and developing empathy and compassion. His approach is unconventional, but that's what's needed to awaken our society's shallowness and stupor when it comes to loving learning. Buy, read/listen, and wander purposefully!

Absorbant learning is very interested!

I really like this "Self-Help" book. The concept of absorbant learning is really interesting to me. I am definitely going to try and utilize my "white spaces" for learning and letting my mind wander purposefully.

Learn to Love Learning by PCT Hiker

THIS IS WONDERFUL! This using Audible is a complete new experience for us retired folk. We are surprised how easy to set the Bluetooth on my car and just tap the Audible app on my phone and the audiobook starts up just where we left off listening. My husband and I are listening to Wander Purposefully as we go in our car to work out, travel here or there or do errands. So we get about a chapter or two a day of listening. Time normally lost listening to banter on the radio we have no choice in listening to. Honestly, being on Chapter 30 of this book, I find myself looking at my empty shower wall and thinking of what I could be learning in my white space using absorbent learning. Not only that, I am looking forward to getting in my car so that I can listen to the next chapter. The time is too short and I want to listen to more. It is just like the author felt when he was driving to work and wanting to listen to more so that he started to walk to work instead. It is so great to get the power charge from all the quotes from significant people in the different books the author cites and the way he weaves it in to EVERYTHING. I love looking at the trail pictures on the wewanderpurposefully.com website, too. There is no hope of my ever walking nearly 2, 600 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail but there is hope I can love learning and get through more of what is on my nightstand to read to by making a habit of audio learning. Hats off to Wander Purposefully.

Inspiring

Great listen. Eric does a fantastic job explaining how he integrated his love of learning with his experience on the PCT. His example show how the reader can maximize their white space with learning and how to develop meaningful connections with others. The bonus trail diary is well worth a listen.
