About this listen

The attempt to hunt down and kill the orks' leader has ended in catastrophe. The Imperium is reeling from the loss of so many beloved heroes, and the military forces of mankind have been reduced to tatters. Koorland now knows that brute force is not the answer - but how else can the orks be fought? In a radical move, he creates small, mixed Chapter units of Adeptus Astartes - compact teams that will hit the enemy hard and fast and with deadly accuracy. With armour painted the black of mourning, the new strike teams become known as the Deathwatch. But will this be enough to tip the balance, or does the Imperium need to discover other new means to defeat the orks?

Rise of the Death Watch

This has been my favorite of the series so far. I love how it highlights the need for and the lethality of the Death Watch. And I couldn't keep myself from grinning every time the Blood Angel gets into combat.

A means to an end.

Another fine entry into the series. The middle part is full of action whereas the end sets up for the next chapter. Fine narration as well.

Great half a book.

Aargh, they did it again! This series has a bad habit of writing only half a story. I honestly believe that some authors simply can't fit a whole story in less than 300 pages. The real pity here is that there is a genuinely good story here if only they gave it room to breathe a little. Once again we see pieces of the crusade confronted by the current state of the Imperium but we don't get the time for more than just lip service.

The performance was average at best. We spend a decent amount if time with a small squad of marines from various big name chapters and the of the them are virtually indistinguishable- Even just showing down their conversations would be nice, but we seemed bound and determined to blow through this half of the story as far as possible.

On the plus side there are some fun action pieces, and over all the characters act reasonable. The good parts make it that much more frustrating that it gets cut short.

Plot armor makes for a boring story

Somr of the worst examples of Space Marine plot armor in this series so far. No excitement in reading about a small squad take on an entire army and walk away nearly unscathed.
