About this listen

Sometimes secrets are better left buried....

Amy Penrose knows how it feels to grow up in a home where your parents harm you more than raise you.

Now an adult, she’s newly qualified as a child psychologist and hopes to help children who’ve gone through struggles of their own.

When a father brings a 12-year-old boy into her office, she recognizes the bruises and the way the boy withdraws into himself. And she wants to help.

But life is never that simple. With a boyfriend at home who believes her career shouldn’t be more important than getting married and having children, and with a boss who seems to want her to stay late all the time, but not for work reasons, and with other patients who need her, Amy is torn.

As she delves into the family’s past, and starts to feel unsafe in her own home, she starts to wonder if this is one child beyond her help.

Well done

Social Service a job that Amy finds a thin line when she talks with a 12 year old boy. Good story of how far can she legally go. A missing mother, bruises on the son, and one angry father add to the questions. Well done.

Brace Yourself

What an excellent story placed in the 80s. My only con was how the MC repeatedly had to distinguish herself as an “educated woman.” But maybe that was par for the course in the 80s? Otherwise, an excellent book one in this series, and I’m looking forward to reading book two! Well done to author’s Farrar and Comley!

Slow start but good

This story started off a little slow for me, but got better. Nice twist in who was watching over Amy. It was a view into the mind of someone really not "normal" in their way of thinking and behaving. Just goes to show you can never really know what lurks in the minds of others. Good characters and story. Didn't disappoint.

Creepy Good!!!

I read this book and all I can say after listening to the audible is the narrator knocked this story out of the ball park. She brought this creeptasic story even more to life. Her voice makes the chills go right down your spine. This book is twisted, a you don't see who dunnit til it's right there. So hold on tight and I hope your nightmares aren't too bad but this book is ooooh so good. Enjoy. I sure did.

This thriller will shock you!

This is one of those books that leave you thinking ‘I did NOT see that coming’. Told from the POV of newly licensed child psychologist , Dr. Amy Penrose. Amy is deeply concerned with one of her cases in which the boy has been expelled from school. Digging deepest, she discovers that his mother abandoned the family 2 yrs ago without a word, and a trace. As she begins to delve further, Amy begins to suspect that Edward’s father is abusing his son and may be the reason for his wife’s disappearance.
Meanwhile, Amy’s personal life is no cake walk...her live-in boyfriend is pressuring her to ‘settle down’ and start a family; her possibly OCD mother has certain expectations of Amy...and her boss is covertly sexually harassing her. Just when you believe that you have this story figured out, it throws you for a loop. Enjoyable psychological thriller.
