About this listen
"No one writes about love like Gayle Forman. Lose yourself in her passionate mash note to rock music, indie bookstores and best of all, the miracles that can happen when you take chances on other people." (E. Lockhart, number-one New York Times best-selling author of We Were Liars and Again Again)
A poignant and uplifting novel about the power of community, from the number-one New York Times best-selling author of If I Stay.
Aaron Stein used to think books were miracles. But not anymore. Even though he spends his days working in his family's secondhand bookstore, the only book Aaron can bear to read is one about the demise of the dinosaurs. It's a predicament he understands all too well, now that his brother and mom are gone and his friends have deserted him, leaving Aaron and his shambolic father alone in a moldering bookstore in a crusty mountain town where no one seems to read anymore.
So when Aaron sees the opportunity to sell the store, he jumps at it, thinking this is the only way out. But he doesn't account for Chad, a "best life" bro with a wheelchair and way too much optimism, or the town's out-of-work lumberjacks taking on the failing shop as their pet project. And he certainly doesn't anticipate meeting Hannah, a beautiful, brave musician who might possibly be the kind of inevitable he's been waiting for.
All of them will help Aaron to come to terms with what he's lost, what he's found, who he is, and who he wants to be, and show him that destruction doesn't inevitably lead to extinction; sometimes it leads to the creation of something entirely new.

Story
If you find yourself talking to writer Jayne Dandy, keep the conversation on comic books and Star Wars - best not to mention men, dating, or S-E-X. Her crippling fear of intimacy has made relationships a big no-no, but hiding behind her laptop isn’t going to get her lightsaber lit. When her therapist recommends that she write erotica as a form of exposure therapy, Jayne is hesitant. But when she is unexpectedly downsized at work, she adopts a pseudonym and secretly publishes her sexy stories to make ends meet.

Two years after his partner, Francesco, died, 28-year-old Kevin Doyle is dusting off his one good suit jacket for yet another funeral, yet another loss in their close-knit group. They had all been young, beautiful, and living the best days of their lives, though they didn't know it. That was before New York City began to feel like a war zone, its horrors somehow invisible, and ignored by the rest of the world. Some people might insist that Francesco is in a better place now, but Kevin definitely isn't.

When she was twenty-six and broke, Skye didn’t think twice before selling her eggs and happily pocketing the cash. Now approaching forty, Skye still moves through life entirely—and unrepentantly—on her own terms, living out of a suitcase and avoiding all manner of serious relationships. Maybe her junior high classmates weren’t wrong when they voted her “Most Likely to Be Single” instead of “Most Ride-or-Die Homie,” but at least she’s always been free to do as she pleases.

"No one writes about love like Gayle Forman. Lose yourself in her passionate mash note to rock music, indie bookstores and best of all, the miracles that can happen when you take chances on other people." (E. Lockhart, number one New York Times best-selling author of We Were Liars and Again Again)
"The fastest way to a girl’s heart is a novel set in a bookstore. I loved We Are Inevitable and its cast of characters (slightly damaged, a little shopworn, but never bargain-basement.) The only flaw: that Bluebird Books doesn’t exist in real life, and I can’t go there to browse." (Kelly Link, author of Stranger Things Happen, Magic for Beginners, Pretty Monsters, and Get in Trouble and owner of Book Moon Bookstore)
"We Are Inevitable is one of those magical books that reads almost like a modern day fable. I found myself falling in love with the entire cast of characters, and rooting for Aaron all the way through. At its heart, this is a beautifully rendered reminder of the importance of community at a time when we need it most." (Len Vlahos, author of Hard Wired and The Scar Boys and owner of Tattered Cover)

Great book - great narrator!
I love Gayle Forman’s books and find it remarkable how real her characters are. But I’m really writing this review for the narrator, who was spectacular - so much so that he disappeared into the characters! Only as the novel ended did I remember that he was just one man, who absolutely nailed the voices so beautifully that they sounded like friends I have. Not once did I think, “hm, for a male narrator, he does Women’s voices really well” - they were just Hannah and Aaron’s mom and Jax and Penny. I own over 1600 books on Audible, and while I find a few narrators mildly annoying and avoidable, I rarely have such favorites that I actively look for them - but Sunil Malhotra will be one I seek out!
