About this listen

When Blanco County rancher Phil Colby encounters a beautiful trespasser bathing in his creek, he has plenty of questions, but she isn’t offering any answers. Before long, Colby realizes she’s on the run. But from what? Over time, he earns her trust, and she begins to share her story. It’s clear she is in danger—and now he is, too. Worse yet, it’s the kind of danger you can’t take to the sheriff. Colby and the woman have no choice but to face it alone, until help comes from an unexpected source—two local good ol’ boys named Red O’Brien and Billy Don Craddock.

The only question is, will they save the day or make things worse?

Weed Killer

Another great narration by Johnny Peppers. The story for this book in the series was not my favorite, but Rehder always does a good job of connecting events.

Another great Ben Rehder story.

The folks in his story are relatable. The good guys are great and the bad guys are just that. I must admit I am enjoying the growth of Red and Billy Don. Keep em coming Ben.

Humerus interactions between the usual suspects & some new characters.

Enjoyed the crazy antics of crazy characters always getting themselves in and out of trouble beneath the radar of “the law”. It’s nice to see (within the series) Billy Don & Red transform from a characterization of poaching rednecks into young men with redeeming qualities (who are still poaching and having redneck moments). They have collected some life experiences like the rest of us yet handle them in unconventional ways which are often amusing. We get to see a new romance developing for Phil Colby (the rancher) and no appearance of Marlin (the game warden) in this story. There are plenty of amusing and dangerous antics in this story. It is well told and changes scenes in a way that keeps it fluid and entertaining. I love Ben Rehder’s writing. In the best of passages It feels like a wonderful creation mashup featuring C.J. Box and Carl Hiaasen.
Johnny Peppers has been a great narrator for this series but at times had a little more difficulty distinguishing between some of the female voices and their male counterparts during conversations (Didn’t seem like any difference in the vocal intonations during some of this listen). Wasn’t enough to detract from the story.
Looking forward to the next Blanco County adventure!
