Learn about Whales with iMindsJNR audio learning series for younger minds. Whales may seem like the biggest fish in the ocean, but they’re actually not fish at all. Whales and dolphins are actually mammals, just like us! In fact, we’re more similar than you might think. Scientists believe that millions of years ago, whales lived on land and spent most of their time fishing in shallow water. Eventually they developed flippers instead of legs and started to live in the water! Now, whales can be found in all of the earth’s oceans.

Editorial reviews

A very short introduction to whales that would be a great choice for kids fascinated by the marine mammals. In a pleasant voice that communicates enthusiasm, the narrator outlines the various types of whales, how and what they eat, the ways they communicate among one another, the threats they face from humans and the environment, and more. Kids will enjoy the fun facts presented in bite-sized “did you know?” chunks, which are perfect for sharing with classmates and parents.

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)

short and sweet

This serves as a good introduction for whales and cetacean life. While obviously not in-depth (it's 5min there's only so much you can add in), it does provide a decent overview and jumping off point.

Informative and interesting

This audio book on whales by iMinds can easily be a part of children audio books collection. It descibes the gentle ocean giants, as to how they came into existence, about their types and classification, their sizes, how and what they eat, how they breathe and how they perceive objects and other sea life in deep oceans, their travel to and fro warm and cold oceans and finally their predators. It is very nice to know whales hunting has gone down. Overall, It is informative and interesting as well as a very visualizing narration that sounds very much like Leah Vandenburg though it shows Todd MacDonald. :)

Whales Once Walked on Land?

Normally I find these iMinds short listens to be worthy of five stars, but this one set off alarms right away. I was very put off by the certainty (not theory) that these majestic animals once had legs and walked on solid ground. This is a listen geared toward children and to push evolution, with no room for creationism is hitting below the belt. In a five minute listen, there's plenty to be said for the environment, science and nature of whales without bringing ANY of the theory of either evolution or creationism into it.
